The Teskey Brothers announce major lineup change

"This year we decided to bring it back to where it all began just the two of us brothers making the music we love."

Fresh from releasing their new single ‘This Will Be Our Year’, been nominated for the Best Blues & Roots Album at the ARIAs and performing a stunning headline slot at Queenscliff Music Festival on Sunday, November 27, the beloved band The Teskey Brothers have announced a major change to their current lineup.

Announcing via social media on Monday, brothers Josh and Sam Teskey revealed that Brendon Love and Liam Gough would be departing the band, with the brothers continuing to work together.

“Hey everyone. Today we’re sharing the news that Brendon Love and Liam Gough are departing as members of The Teskey Brothers,” the post read.

“It has been an honour to work with these guys over the years. As rhythm section they have been the backbone of the band, holding down a tight groove and helping to shape our sound. We want to sincerely thank them for their commitment through all of this crazy rollercoaster ride.

“This year we decided to bring it back to where it all began just the two of us brothers making the music we love, more to come on that soon.

“In the meantime, we look forward to closing out this chapter with Liam and Brendon this Sunday in Melbourne at Palace Foreshore. We hope you can come along and toast to them with us.

“Love Josh and Sam Teskey.”

The Teskey Brothers are one of the great success stories in contemporary soul and roots music.

Having formed in 2008, the band has risen quickly to become one of Australia’s most respected and dynamic bands, with a great live show and a super groove that harks back to the 1960s and 70s and an era of great rock. Rooted in the partnership between vocalist Josh Teskey and his brother, guitarist and engineer Sam Teskey, the soul and R&B outfit from Warrandyte on the fringes of Melbourne have made their mark on the mainstream since releasing their debut album, Half Mile Harvest, in January 2017.

The Teskey Brothers’ second album, 2019’s Run Home Slow, reached #2 in Australia and resonated with audiences across the globe, leading to major headline shows in London, Amsterdam and New York.  In the wake of its success, The Teskey Brothers landed slots at major festivals like Bonnaroo and Japan’s Fuji Rock, performed in front of ten-thousand people at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre and appeared on US network TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live!  Along the way, Sam Teskey earned a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album and The Teskey Brothers released a live album Live At The Forum, landing their first Australian #1 album.

Earlier this month, The Teskey Brothers make their eagerly anticipated return with the release of their new single, ‘This Will Be Our Year’ – a cover of the classic song by The Zombies, and a timely sentiment as we approach 2023. On this version of the track, we hear the psychedelic-era pop sound of the original is supplanted by classic Teskey Brothers soul.

‘This Will Be Our Year’ sees the band collaborate with producer Eric J Dubowsky for the first time, whose CV includes records by Flume, Chet Faker and Weezer.

The Teskey Brothers version of ‘This Will Be Our Year’ retains the harmonic and melodic integrity of the Zombies original, but in their hands, ‘This Will Be Our Year’ feels untethered to the past, newly animated by Josh’s distinctive vocal expression. The arrangement is unfussy, decorated with organs, horns and a hint of Muscle Shoals in the rhythm section. They haven’t given it a complete facelift, but the psychedelic-era pop sound of the original is supplanted by classic Teskey Brothers soul.

Catch The Teskey Brothers in their renowned foursome at the Palace Foreshore in Melbourne on December 4. Tickets here.
