The Smithies step in a new direction with their newest single, lifted from their forthcoming sixth album.
Fresh from bringing their energetic stage show and some killer tunes to regional Victoria earlier this year, The Smith Street Band have just released ‘Everyone Is Lying To You For Money’ – the second single from The Smith Street Band’s forthcoming sixth album.
Recorded at their home-grown studio in regional Victoria in between a string of tour dates, ‘Everyone Is Lying To You For Money’ is a short, loud, angry song about misinformation.

While there’s still the undercurrent of their rollicking, anthemic singalong and toe-tapping-laden sound, this is The Smithies at their most creative yet, blending their finely honed pub rock sound with samples and robot voices all wrapped around lead singer Wil Wagner’s frustrated and vulnerable lyrics.
The chaotic film clip accompanying the new single was animated and directed by Raymond Tuifao Lalotoa and filmed by Ian Laidlaw.
Their sixth studio album, which is set to follow on from #1 ARIA Album ‘Don’t Waste Your Anger’ released in 2020, was recorded by the band’s bass player Fitzy at Bush House Studios, mixed by Anton Hapog (Silverchair, Powderfinger, Jebediah, The Whitlams) and mastered by George Georgiadis.
The Smith Street Band offered a first taste of the new album in May with single ‘I Don’t Wanna Do Nothing Forever’ which has held rank in triple j’s most played tracks for two months since its release and the accompanying video clip, shot by Nick Manuell, was Feature Clip at RAGE.
Once again this single will be released with three live tracks, recorded at The Forum in Melbourne earlier this year by the bands live sound engineer Joel Taylor.
Twelve years in and The Smith Street Band have no plans to slow down, with an 18 date Australian tour starting this month. 2022 will see the band get back to what they do best with the tour taking them to Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia and the ACT.
