Having temporarily closed in the pandemic, the resort was put up for sale last August by receivers acting on behalf of Sydney-based private lender Smart Wealth after the group of Chinese companies that owned and operated it was placed in the hands of administrators from PKF in July. The resort was sold earlier this year for $12.8 million, paying just over half what it changed hands for four years ago for about $23 million.

The 76-hectare resort, originally developed by Rupert Murdoch’s nephew, Paddy Handbury, includes an 18-hole championship golf course designed by PGA tour winner Stuart Appleby (with up to five tee positions on every hole and over 100 carefully positioned bunkers), plus a 112-room upmarket hotel previously operated under Accor’s Peppers brand, a 25-metre indoor pool, tennis courts and Hanners restaurant which has all been an important destination for the region and the Great Ocean Road since opening.

With news owners – who have deep roots in Torquay – championing change, The Sands Resort is ascending into a new era with a revitalised vision celebrating the surf coast culture of Torquay, where localism meets tourism.

“Destination Leisure Holdings, our new owners, include long term Torquay locals who have ensured we honour and stay true to the history and authenticiy of the resort as the jewel of the Surf Coast Shire,” the Sands shared.

“We’re currently in the final stages of a $5million property renovation and refurbishment. We’re shaping things up to deliver a fresh, new experience in an effort to better serve our guests and visitors.”

As part of the multi-million dollar renovation, guests will find fresh new suites and rooms providing a sanctuary of personal space, designed for coastal living and the promise of a great night’s sleep, inspired dining options, new function and events spaces, as well as 6 new dog-friendly rooms that offer an enhanced experience for guests to holiday with their perfect pooch. These ground floor rooms include a private terrace for easy outdoor access and are walking distance to the beach where doggos can roam free, fetch, sit and dive in for a splash!

A drawcard for the venue has and will continue to boast the panoramic views of the 18-hole links-style championship golf course, moulded into the sand dunes.
