The Gellibrand River Blues and Blueberry Festival

The Gellibrand River Blues and Blueberry Festival are a point of difference in the blues festival scene in Australia. While they have some of the finest acts on offer, they also have some of the tastiest blueberries and iconic location to back it up as one of the most original festivals around. Now in its fifth year, the Otways Tourist Park will once again hold the festival on February 27 after popular demand.

Past festivals have seen the likes of Dream Boogie and Collard Greens and Gravy grace the stage, though this time around the event welcomes Greg Dodd and the Hoodoo Men, John-Luke Shelley, High Speed Steel and newcomers Last Razoo.
Greg Dodd and the Hoodo Men have been playing their Chicago influenced blues for many years and always deliver a highly energetic set. The band are originally from Melbourne and have received a number of awards and accolades throughout their career. They’re also no newcomers to the festival scene and have played Forth Valley Blues Festival, Echuca Winter Blues Festival and the Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival to name just a few, so their set is sure to be a highlight.

The event is a celebration of some of the finest blues in the region as are the accompanying berries, which are grown nearby in the Otways and what the region has quickly become known for. Word is there will be a specially made blueberry ice cream made for the weekend that’s certain to be delicious – if the blueberries themselves are anything to go by.

Last year the blueberries were ready for picking on the same weekend of the festival, and this year is set to be even bigger. With the chance to pick or buy an array of blueberry items from muffins through to the actual plant.

Following the Saturday when the festival is held, markets will be held on the Sunday at the Gellibrand Reserve, giving a chance to get a full sense of the creativity in the region and to perhaps take home something special.

Over 40 stallholders will be present at the market, showcasing their wares in glassware, pottery, jewelry, paintings, sculptures and woodwork for sale and all types of foods. There’ll be live entertainment, face painting for the kids and plenty of hot food to fuel your shopping.

Tickets to the festival are selling quick, as is accomodation in the area, so best get onto this one quickly to take part in such an original idea and unique opportunity. Cost is $30 per adult or $70 for a Family Ticket (2 adults and 2 children under 16). Tickets can be purchased by calling (03) 52358357 or via the website on www.bluesandblueberryfestival.com.au.
