‘The end of an era’: After 47 years, Opsy’s Leopold fish and chip institution hands over ownership

The fast food restaurant has announced the sale of the beloved business.

In the heart of the Leopold community, a cherished institution bids farewell. After years of serving up crispy golden fish, perfectly cooked chips and mouthwatering burgers, Opsy’s Leopold Drive thru Fish ‘N’ Chips is handing over the keys.

A warm and welcoming haven, where families gathered, friends caught up, and generations shared stories over shared platters of delectable seafood and where friendly staff always greeted you with a smile for the past 47 years, the owners of the small family business, Peter and Helen Opsimoulis, announced the sale of ‘Opsy’s Leopold’ on social media this week.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

“It is with bittersweet feelings to inform you on the sale of our small family-owned business – ‘Opsy’s Leopold’,” the post read.

“Back in 1976 our family business began with an empty shop and a drive to give. Five fish and chip shops later, our family grew and we started our 6th but 1st drive-through shop Opsy’s Leopold where after 11 years, three generations have thrived working all together.

“Serving the Bellarine Peninsula for the last 47 years of nothing less than hard work and endless amounts of time, we have decided to give ourselves a small break before we move on to the next phase of our lives.”

Located at 670-678 Bellarine Hwy, Leopold, the fish and chip shop (and most of the time a hub of community activity) will remain in the hands of Mr & Mrs Opsimoulis and the family until their final night on August 6 2023.

Upon announcing the news, the family expressed enormous gratitude to the community.

“During this overwhelming time, we would like to say a massive thank you to each and everyone’s ongoing support they have shown to our business. We appreciate and cherish all of our loyal customers for their continued support and friendships we have formed in the years.

“Although we feel It’s the end of an era, it has been well worth our pleasure serving you amazing customers with our best quality fish and chips. It something we take extreme pride in, but we couldn’t have made it this far without our customers and especially our beloved staff who we thank dearly for their efforts.

“Although Opsy’s fish and chips has come to an end for our family, even though we were separate entities, Chopsy’s who is still family owned by Peter and Marina, will continue on as part of our family legacy.”

This will be a mighty loss for the community. Who can forget the mouthwatering aroma of freshly fried fish and the satisfying crunch of the golden batter? Generously portioned chips, lightly salted and perfectly crisp, became the stuff of legends. However these flavours that are etched into our culinary memories will continue with the new owners.
