Whether you’re in lockdown induced hibernation, or just trying to avoid the cold, now is as good a time as any to sit down and watch a good film or series. Not quite sure what to watch? We might be able to help you there. Here’s a few of the best things coming to streaming services this month.
Puberty Blues – Seasons 1 & 2 (Netflix, 7th of June)
Puberty Blues might be a bit of a nostalgic deep cut for some of our readers. Based on the original novel by Kathy Lette and Gabrielle Cary, Puberty Blues is a coming of age drama that follows best friends Debbie and Sue as they battle through the growing pains of their teenage years in late 1970’s Australia. The series offers a snapshot into the early days of Australia’s suburban revolution, where ‘teenager’ culture is taking off and households are just as easily split apart as they are established, thanks to the abundance and ease of access to money, loans and divorces. Puberty Blues is surprisingly raw and dark at times, making for some deeply personal viewing. There’s enough levity in here to balance out the show’s bleaker themes, making it incredibly easy to binge.

Lupin Part 2 (Netflix, 11th of June)
After Part 1 turned out to be a surprise smash hit, Lupin Part 2 comes as no surprise. An espionage mystery thriller hailed as “Europe’s answer to Ocean’s 11”, Lupin’s first season skyrocketed into Netflix’s top 10 to become the most successful French series in the platform’s history. Season 1 follows professional thief Assane Diop is out to avenge his father, who was framed for the theft of a diamond necklace by his employer Hubert Pellegrini. Using his wits and mastery of stealth and subterfuge, Diop is on a mission to expose Pellegrini for his crimes. If Part 1 was anything to go off, Part 2 is looking to be just as tense, thrilling and nail biting. Check this one out if you’re in need of some edge-of-your-seat viewing that will make the hours fly by.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (Netflix, 13th of June)
If you’re in need of satisfying your Hollywood superhero fix, look no further than Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. From producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Spider-Verse has received numerous accolades, including an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film. The film follows the hero’s journey of Miles Morales, an Afro-Latino teenager from Brooklyn who, after a chance encounter with Peter Parker (AKA Spider-Man), is thrust into taking up the mantle and saving the city with the help of a rag-tag group of Spider-People from alternate dimensions. There’s almost nothing to fault about this one. The performances are great, the script is air tight and hilarious, the soundtrack slaps and the art style is jaw dropping. Most importantly, Spider-Verse has a lot of heart and leaves every viewer with a great message about self belief, making it perfect for family viewing.

Whiplash (Amazon Prime, 15th June)
Whiplash is an intense drama about the psychological pressures of aspiring world class musicians. Pitting an abusive, perfectionist teacher against a naive and ambitious student, Whiplash hauntingly details the cycles of abuse and trauma between the two, as they push each other to their absolute limits. The drama is gripping, confronting and enthralling. Whiplash is renowned for its oscar winning performance from J.K Simmons as Fletcher, who mesmerizes you with the sheer unrelenting brutality of his pursuit of perfection. Whiplash is a hard watch, but it’s thought provoking and meaningful.
Tenet (Netflix, 16th June)
Christopher Nolan’s latest blockbuster spectacle finally arrives to streaming! Boasting some truly brain-busting special effects, Tenet follows ‘The Protagonist’ (John David Washington) through time bending action set pieces as he attempts to stop an attack in the future from devastating the present. Featuring an all star cast and a killer score, Tenet should be at the top of you A-List blockbuster viewing experiences at home this month. Just be sure to turn the speakers up for this one.
