Spinifex Gum, a musical collaboration between The Cat Empire's Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill, and Marliya Choir are set to join MSO for two spectacular must-see performances this July.
Delivering a beautiful display of music and art to challenge and inspire contemporary Australia this NAIDOC week, the award-winning Spinifex Gum is teaming up with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Felix Riebl and Emma Donovan in a symphonic show-stopping collaboration of voice, sound, movement and song cycle.
Produced by The Cat Empire’s Felix Riebl and Ollie McGill, Spinifex Gum is the award-winning musical collaboration with Marliya, a choir of talented young Indigenous women and girls from Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait, celebrating the vast talent of Indigenous youth.

Taking to Hamer Hall in Melbourne on Saturday, July 9 for two special performances, audiences will witness a unique version of a show from the all-female ensemble which is part political and part aspirational, exploring hard-hitting issues, themes of friendship and empowerment, and celebrating what can be achieved when we come together as one. From the social disparity present in The Pilbara to deaths in custody, to disproportionate incarceration, and land rights, Spinifex Gum delivers lyrics and songs that have the power to disarm, inspire, and speak to us in a way that no individual voice can.

The live performance, conducted by the extraordinary Lyn Williams AM of Gondwana Choirs alongside Ben Northey and choreographed by former Bangarra Dance Theatre dancer Deborah Brown, will also see special guests Emma Donovan, The Cat Empire’s frontman Felix Riebl and band member Ollie McGill join the choir, with more to be announced.
Nominated for Best New Australian Work at the 2019 Helpmann Awards and with performances at the likes of WOMADelaide and Live at the Bowl in recent years, Spinifex Gum is quickly becoming a mainstay of the Aussie festival lineup, delivering powerful performances through their compelling blend of harmony and protest singing in both English and Yindjibarndi, while trailblazing a new pop-choir genre.
This collaboration of music, movement and lyrical mastery in Melbourne is not to be missed.
