Sony has finally unveiled the sleek PlayStation 5 console

Sony has finally revealed details of the new Playstation 5 (PS5), showcasing a new sleek design and which games will be available to play on the upcoming next-gen gaming console which is scheduled to go on sale later this year.

At the company’s live-streamed event, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) shared the device’s new design layout, showing two versions of the PS5. A standard one with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive, and a new Digital Edition that completely removes the console’s disc drive.

Visually, the new console is a huge departure from previous hardware, being white, asymmetrical, and has a set of fins sticking out of the top. Of course, the console matches the new controller – the so-called “DualSense” gamepad – which was revealed earlier this year. A media remote control and headphones will also be available as accessories, although Sony are yet to reveal a pricing guide.

“The PS5 gameplay experience will be the same, so the choice is all yours,” Sid Shuman from SIE content communications said at the launch. “While there are some slight differences in the look of each model, for the overall design, we wanted to deliver a console that’s bold, stunning, and unlike any previous generation of PlayStation.”

Alongside the design, the announcement also included the games coming to the PS5. Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales was one of the games that will be exclusive to PS5, while other titles included a long-awaited addition to the Ratchet & Clank franchise, a new Gran Turismo instalment, and the latest release for Guerilla Games, Horizon Forbidden West. The showcase also featured reveals from third-party publishers including Bugsnax, HITMAN 3, NBA 2K21, Resident Evil 8: Village, among others.

During the announcement, the company also reflected on Grand Theft Auto 5, announcing that enhanced and expanded versions of Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online will launch on the platform in the second half of 2021. Alongside this, a new standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online will also be made available, with access to all PS5 owners for free within the first three months of the title launching. All GTAV PS4 owners will also score GTA$1,000,000 every month until the PS5 version of the game launches in 2021.

The PlayStation 5 launches worldwide later this year.
