Words by Benjamin Lamb

They're not new, but they're some of the best.

Now that it’s been a few months since restaurants have opened back up, it’s time to get a bit adventurous and try some of Geelong’s coolest and quirkiest restaurants. There’s classy hot chicken, fancy burgers, and even dining in a hotel lobby!

Let’s dive in.

The Hot Chicken Project

If you love classy fried chicken, this will be the joint for you. Owned by the legend that created ‘Belle’s Hot Chicken’, this is the next step up. The spot is filled with the tastiest specials, beautiful local wine, and lots and lots of chicken.

There’s lots of cool stuff on the menu at HCP, that’ll make you never want to leave. The specials board has seen such things as pork ribs, a deep-fried banana split, and even the old classic; mac and cheese.

If you like what you see, you can also try their sister restaurant OK Smash next door, specialising in cheeseburgers and champagne.

Frankie Bar and Eatery

This is a place you’ll definitely want to set up camp in. You would honestly think you’ve walked into the lobby of a Hollywood hotel. Decked out with comfy leather couches and rose gold décor, it’s a dream aesthetic.

Now onto the menu, their classy Japanese / Asian inspired menu needs to be experienced to be believed. There’s some tasty okonomiyaki pancakes, the classic nasi goreng, and everyone’s favourite, crispy pork belly.

Boss Burger Co.

This cool spot can be found at a few points across the place, like Ballarat, Colac and Torquay. But the best point is found on Pakington St in Geelong, it’s where you’ll find a bunch of pretty cool and quirky burgers.

They’ve got a bunch of rad burgers, hot dogs, and even a rad range of fries to have on the side. There are bacon topped fries, pork topped fries, jalapeno topped fries, and if you’re feeling fancy; even jackfruit topped fries.

Analogue Academy

Located in the heart of Central Geelong, Get to this hidden gem before it gets popular. Analogue academy is a coffee shop, a film lab, a gallery and a hot doggery. So there’s no need to go anywhere else!

You can get your film developed while you enjoy a beautiful Malani coffee. The venue also offers some pretty cool events; like exhibitions openings, walking tours, plus a heap more! Have a look below.

Union Street Wine

Leave the kids at home for the night while you head to Union Street Wine, an after-dinner spot where you can enjoy wine by the glass or by the bottle. You can pair your wine with a nice classy board of some small goods and tasty cheeses.

The amazingly stocked bar has been well-curated by the venue’s owners, you’re bound to find something up your alley. It’s a bottle shop too, so you can bring home a bottle or two if you find a wine you like.

If you’re in the West, they’ve just opened a second venue that see them teaming up with The Cheese Society.

Tulip Bar And Restaurant

If you love to eat classy food, but don’t like hoity-toity-ness of the restaurants, then Tulip is the venue for you. Run by two hugely popular chefs from other phenomenal restraunts, you’ll know you’re in good hands.

As all good restaurants do, Tulip’s got a seasonal menu, getting the best local produce at the best times. They’ve got a bunch of awesome share plates on their menu, all for pretty reasonable prices.
