Shane Howard & Yirrmal: Bendigo Blues and Roots Festival

Up-and-coming indigenous artist, Yirrmal Marika will make his Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival debut on Saturday 11 November, sharing the historic Ulumbarra Theatre stage, supporting Shane Howard.

Originally from Yirrkala in north-east Arnhem Land, Yirrmal has already gained numerous plaudits in his fledgling music career. Inspired by his late grandfather, Yothu Yindi frontman, Dr. G. Yunupingu, Yirrmal blends traditional and contemporary sounds as he sings about his homeland and culture with tenderness and passion.

BB & RMF Festival Director, Colin Thompson, said Yirrmal was a perfect fit for the growing festival, which is known for supporting young artists.

“Yirrmal is an inspiring young singer-songwriter and guitarist with a powerful voice,” said Thompson.

“He is a strong, positive role-model for the younger generation of artists and has the type of
leadership skills you expect from someone much older and established.”

Yirrmal supports Shane Howard, his mentor, at the Ulumbarra. For 40 years Shane Howard has been mapping the Australia through his music. From the dry desert landscape where he penned his
anthemic Solid Rock to the wild rivers of Tasmania, he has created a uniquely Australian voice and
traversed a vast landscape.

The show will pay homage to Howard’s thirteen albums and 40-year musical journey of singing,
writing and journeying the globe – from campfires to concert halls.

For the first time this year at Bendigo, blues and roots die-hards can purchase a festival pass – The
Easy Rider – which promises an exclusive meet-and- greet with Shane Howard, best seats in the
house at ticketed events, entry to the Jules Boult Summer Gumbo Show at the Capital Theatre, a
merchandise pack, and much more.

The festival will feature more than 140 acts from Australia and overseas playing in 50 venues over a
four-day period from November 9-12.

The Easy Rider festival pass is available for an early-bird rate of just $120 until October 31, and for
$130 thereafter. More than $240 value is on offer.

Now in its seventh year, the Bendigo Blues & Roots Music Festival continues goes from strength to
strength. The Festival is run solely by local volunteers. With a line-up of local, national and
international artists, there is always plenty to see and hear – from talented newcomers to genre
stalwarts who have been refining their sound over many years.
