‘Rutherglen in the City’: Taste the best of Rutherglen’s wineries in Melbourne this October

Wine lovers can immerse themselves in more than 100 rare and boutique wines from a broad range of unique and undiscovered varietals from the Rutherglen region.

Following a three-year hiatus, the Winemakers of Rutherglen will journey back down the Hume Highway this spring, returning to Melbourne for Rutherglen in the City on Saturday 1 October 2022.

Home to more than 160 years of winemaking history, the Winemakers of Rutherglen are an inspiring collective of 18 wineries from one of Australia’s most historic, authentic and innovative wine regions. Rutherglen is located in North East Victoria – a three-hour drive from Melbourne, a four-hour drive from Canberra and a 30-minutes from Albury.

Gifting wine lovers the day of all days this Spring, the inspiring and talented collective will converge on The Timber Yard in Port Melbourne for a day of unlimited wine tastings from 15 of the region’s best producers.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Between 12pm and 7pm, guests can taste more than 100 rare and boutique wines from one of Australia’s most undiscovered and alternative wine regions, discovering something different at each pop-up cellar door and tasting wine varietals that flourish in the region including cellar door exclusives.

Giving wine aficionados the chance to immerse themselves in the bounty of the whole Rutherglen wine region, there will be an array of intimate wine masterclasses, live music sets from acoustic artists and duos and a range of food options to pair with top drops including 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar and cheese and charcuterie grazing boxes featuring local North East produce.

For those with a sense of adventure, guests can venture to the dark side of wine and try the world renowned Muscat of Rutherglen – a secret drink that sits somewhere between a wine and a spirit. Unlike anything else produced anywhere in the world, Muscat of Rutherglen is rich, complex, mysterious and full of flavour. Perfect on its own, Muscat of Rutherglen can also be served over ice as an aperitif or experimented with in cocktails.

For those keen to handcraft and perfect their own unique blend at home, Stanton & Killeen Wines will run a free Liquid Luxury masterclass at Rutherglen in the City for home barrel enthusiasts where one can learn the art of sipping, swishing, blending, and testing from seventh generation winemakers.

There’s also a sparkling masterclass with Damien Cofield from Cofield Wines worth checking out, where you’ll also sample some of Cofield’s finest sparkling wines paired with local Rutherglen charcuterie; and there’s a Natural & sustainable wine comparison tasting with Olive Hills Estate winemaker Ross Perry.

That’s barely scraping the surface of what will be on offer though, with so much more to be discovered.

Rutherglen in the City-goers can stock up their wine collections by purchasing wine they taste on the day. All wines will be available by the glass, by the bottle or to take home.

Rutherglen in the City takes place on Saturday, October 1 from 12pm to 7pm at The Timber Yard in Melbourne. Tickets can be pre-purchased online for $30 here with a select number of tickets also available on the day (for $40).
