If you’re unaware of Australian rock mainstays Gyroscope, then you’ve been missing out on some classic albums, numerous singles, and some of the best live shows imaginable!
Having just returned with their stellar new EP titled ‘4YRLV’, which sees the band recently tour across the country in October and November, it’s actually quite bitter-sweet, with the tour marking drummer Rob Nassif’s last with the band as he moves to double down on his increasingly successful artist management career, where he looks after the likes of buzzing acts The Faim and RedHook.
To reflect and pay tribute to his time with the band, Rob has shared his top 5 favourite Gyroscope songs, and why!
1. Snakeskin
I think this song perfectly comes up everything that makes our band unique. It starts off with a few piano notes and ends with a fierce driving riff with Dan screaming at full voice! In between all of that are plenty of great melodies and atmosphere. It is our most popular song on JJJ landing at #16 on the Hottest 100 of 2007 and is still the song most likely to close our set. We also had a huge TV synch with the AFL that helped catapult this song and our album Breed Obsession to an ARIA #1 album.
2. Dream Vs Scream
I love how anthemic this song is. I can also guarantee that I am the only one in the band who would put it in their top 5. Maybe it’s also because I had a lot to do with the writing of this song. I was listening to a lot of U2 at the time, so this song started with my drum beat and I kept trying to steer the vibe and energy into a U2-esque feeling. I love Dan’s chorus melody. The structure is very simple, but you never really get tired of the song.
3. Safe Forever
Still the most fun to play live. Hearing the crowd sing along to the ‘Safe Forever’ part is always so so great. This song was also the 2nd song of ours to get high rotation on JJJ and really helped push our band to the next level. It is also the song that has most Gyro inspired tattoos names after it. This song came into our lives at a really important time and we have never stopped playing it in our set.
4. Crooked Thought
I love the energy this song possesses. The chorus hits so hard, and I love that it came to us so late in our career. Started as a jam and we quickly turned it into a song in a few hours. The actual song structure is super interesting as well.
5. These Days
The opening riff of the song is my favourite lead of Zoran Trivic. From the moment I heard him play that riff I knew the song would be special. Juxtapose that atmosphere with the intensity of the chorus, and you have that light and dark thing Gyro tends to do really well. Some fun drums in this one that always keeps me entertained and challenged live.
