Rey is a independent short film that was shot in Geelong over three days in February this year. Featuring cast and crew made up of many Geelong locals as well, this short is massive accomplishment and credit to those involved.
Directed by Ryan Chamley, the film was written and produced by Luke Saliba, a local actor and producer who is currently submitted the film into international festivals, with the film having just been selected for the Berlin Flash Film Festival.
Beginning his training and working as an actor at the young age of 10, Saliba is not short of determination in his work, clear from his resume of landing a number of roles in Television, Film and TVC’s – as well as being a senior teacher at Mooregrace Acting Studios in Geelong. You probably recognise Saliba from his role Winners & Losers (2011) and The Doctor Blake Mysteries (2013).
With a clear passionate in seeing the film industry flourish within Geelong, Saliba and actor John Tui (known for his roles in Battleship (2012), The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)and Power Rangers S.P.D. (2005) and who just wrapped up the new Star Wars film) decided to film in the regional town, and use the small but great network they have.
The film itself revolves around the main character Rey. After the death of a work colleague, Rey has a crash landing and re-evaluates his life, learning to climb out of his comfort zone. With no future prospects or limitations, he colourfully crashes into Annie. And that my friends is where his life begins to change.
Rey is an independent comedy set to be released in 2017. With its first cast and crew screening over the weekend at The Pivotonian Cinema, the film will be screened at the North Bellarine Film Festival on Nov 18th. Tickets via https://www.nbff.live/
