Readings Cinemas Waurn Ponds is screening The Matrix Trilogy this weekend

Weekend plans, sorted.

Can you believe The Matrix came out 21 years ago. Love it, hate it, there’s no deying it: The Matrix is a pop-culture juggernaut that continues to provide a thrilling punch, time and time again.

Directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix is the first film of the Matrix trilogy (it debuted in Australia in 1999), a cyberpunk dystopian series that centers around a future where most of humanity is unknowingly (and unwillingly) trapped inside a simulated reality, while their bodies are used as energy sources for machines. Within this simulated version of 1999, a hacker named Neo (Keanu Reeves) is contacted by the mysterious Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and made aware of the truth of his reality by Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), the leader of a group of freed human resistance fighters. Neo joins Morpheus, who believes him to be a prophesied Chosen One known as the One.

Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, the follow-ups to the first film, both hit theaters in 2003, and become a world-wide phenomenon, revolutionising the use of computer-generated imagery in filmmaking. One of the ‘newer’ effects created for The Matrix was called “Bullet Time,” or time-slice photography. For the film effect, time appears to have slowed down during an action scene to show high-speed objects such as gun bullets to be seen by viewers. It’s wild to think how far we’ve come.

All three films have collectively earned more than $1.6 billion at the global box office.

This weekend, Readings Cinema in Waurn Ponds are giving fans that chance to watch not only The Matrix, but also The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions on the big screen, as part of their ‘trilogy showdowns’. This comes as the cinema tries to adapt their business following their closure due to the coronavirus pandemic, injecting a sense of nostalgia into movie-goers until new films are released later this year.

Now is a great time for fans to catch up on The Matrix movie trilogy on Netflix considering a fourth Matrix movie is already in the works with Reeves and Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, and Lana Wachowski on board to produce, direct and co-write the new film.

With the temporary shutdown of multiple movie productions due to concerns surrounding the spread of the coronavirusthe new movie’s original May 21, 2021 release date could end up being moved.
