With support from Victoria’s Pride Regional Activation Program, as delivered by Australia’s premier queer arts and cultural organisation Midsumma, Queer Cakes and Butch Bakes aims to bring joy, entertainment and mouthwatering food together to celebrate the culture, history, creativity and determination of the LGBTQIA+ community in Castlemaine.
The bake-off includes six prize categories open to all to enter, with celebrity culinary connoisseurs from the community taking on judging duties including Johnny Baker, Kelly Ann Blake, Alexander Marano and Loudon Copper from Bar Midland, Ingrid Phyland and Lisa from The Tea Dispensary. The prize categories include gayest cake which awards the most vibrant and diva-like creation, best tart, beyond the binary which awards the most non-conforming flavour palette, deadliest cake which looks at the most fabulous feature of native ingredients, This cake is ‘brat’ which is a specific category for youth entry under the age of 18 years, and the infamous People’s Choice award, voted on by the public. Fabulous prizes are available for the winner of each category.
In addition to the feature event that is the bake-off competition, there will be entertainment provided by queer cowgirl Jess Parker, and a tea party hosted by the Silver Rainbow Social Club.
It’s a fully fabulous day sprinkled with cake and community with Castlemaine Pride leading the way. Castlemaine Pride is a volunteer-led community group that supports the LGBTQIA+ community in Mount Alexander. Since 2018, it has run Castlemaine Pride Week to celebrate diversity and equality in the region.
