Purveyors of fine Melbournicana, Ghost Towns of the Midwest unveil thought-provoking new album

Words by Sally Poehland

'Other Places' is out November 20

Songs of change, reflection and growing up combine together brilliantly in the thought-provoking new album ‘Other Places’ by alternative country outfit Ghost Towns of the Midwest. Hailing from the outer mountain and coastal regions of Melbourne, the band release the album digitally on November 20, followed by a vinyl release over Summer.

Formed around Melbourne Singer/Songwriter Cam Ewart, who has shared the stage with Tim Rogers, CW Stoneking, and many more, the album was recorded at the old Atlantis Studios in Port Melbourne. Opening with the gentle pickings of “City Lights”, the album builds slowly and takes the listener on a reflective journey of our times.

The second track “Used to Hide” is a tale of nostalgia, describing how the writers’ childhood suburb has changed with trees being chopped down and back roads being paved.

This track is followed up brilliantly with “Heart” featuring stripped back vocals and enchanting violin.

By this time, the listener is ready for the bluesy honky-tonk sounds of “In the Rain,” featuring lazy harmonica and solo vocals, creating a sound reminiscent of The Black Crowes.

Listeners are then eased back down and farewelled with ‘Rust’, a track that came together on the spur of the moment in the studio. Caught in two takes, it settles the ears after the grander sonic moments of the album and serves as a quiet kiss goodnight.

Although recorded mostly last year, ‘Other Places’ is eerily relevant to today’s climate. An album for the mind and soul.

“Other Places” is out November 20. Until then, check out their music below.
