PREMIERE: Tanya George’s new single ‘Normality’ gets us moving to her groovy electro-pop vocals

Words by Bella de Almeida Reis

Pop on your dancing shoes.

Bringing a fresh blend of vocal arrangements to the forefront, Melbourne’s looping genius Tanya George embraces her electro-pop roots in new single ‘Normality’ which just dropped today.

Engineered by Jimmy Alexander (Awaken I Am), ‘Normality’ comes as the third instalment of Tanya’s highly anticipated EP also titled Normality, set to release 15 September this year. This time round, Tanya perpetuates a dynamic sonic experience for listeners, blessing our ears with her stunning 4.5 octave range. At first you may might think she has backing vocalists, but lucky for us, we get the pleasure of immersing ourselves in Tanya’s solo craft.

Tanya asks the questions we’ve all been thinking during these unprecedented times in isolation and delves deeper into how she’s interpreted music differently this year.

“The single is about questioning what is normality? What is the normal anymore in society, in our lives? What is a normal life? Am I normal? What is normal?,” says the singer-songwriter.

“In 2020 we haven’t been living our normal lives, so I wanted to challenge the preconceived notion of what makes ‘normal’ music. I did this by producing songs made only from my vocals so I could also share the message that voices are powerful when they come together. And in these difficult times, I feel that our collective voices will be what sees us through.”

Since securing #1 on the triple j Unearthed and triple j electronic charts for last month’s single ‘My Hymn’, Tanya has proved her ability, yet again, to set a high benchmark for the music she sends our way. We continue to be in awe of Tanya’s unique soundscape.

In the meantime, stop what you’re doing and bop to ‘Normality’ below.
