"The sun shines on you" Jovi Skyler sings out as the 'Frankenstein' footage shifts between playing guitar instore at an instrument shop and playing with a tiny kitten.
Sydneysider vegetarian punk-rocker singer- songwriter Jovi Skyler is an experimenter and creator, piecing together the organs and body of a song in a similar fashion to one Frankenstein. As Frankenstein sewed, bolted and electrified his monster to life, so too has Skyler on his latest single.
Out tomorrow, Friday 4 October 2024, ‘Frankenstein’ is Skyler’s latest creation, crafted from socio-cultural observations and stitched together with a sonic fusion of bass and guitar that uplifts his early 90’s spirit and spits out a twisted psychedelia sound.

Jovi Skyler first hit the scene in 2019 with his single ‘Love Bite’, using his learnings from his stint at Conservatorium of Music and his European residence for two years where he gigged across cafes, bars and venues under various monikers, crafting his original sound as a soloist. The following years would see him fuelled with a fever to cement his creative fervour, with a “desire to focus a light on the dynamics of heady distractions”.
Jovi Skyler went on to release his self-titled debut EP at the head of the global pandemic, refining his post-grunge structures and receiving recognition on US college radio for second single ‘We Went to the Zoo’. 2021 saw the release of ‘Danger Land’ and ‘Tattoos’ which saw Skyler step into the word of DIY music video production, something he has continued exploring with his latest ‘Frankenstein’ single. With the added debut LP Nothing to Do emerging in 2023, including the release of single and accompanying music video ‘If You Think So’ in May, Jovi Skyler further continued his rocking reach. The album further boasted ‘Never Wanted’ which charted at number 1 on the Punk Rock Demonstration, ‘Got It Wrong’ hit number 3 on Banks Radio Australia, remaining in the spot for two consecutive weeks and tracked ‘If You Think So’, ‘Got It Wrong’ and ‘Survivor’ all receiving significant airplay. ‘Virtual Reality’ further continued the trend to close out the year.
Moving into 2024 and the release of ‘Frankenstein’ Skyler sank into the songwriting cave releasing a brand-new EP on 5 April. As recorded at The Parliament Studios in Sydney, the EP saw Jovi Skyler jump into new territory, picking up and mastering a bass. With this new instrument under his belt, Jovi Skyler bounces into his next era with ‘Frankenstein’ leading the way.
‘Frankenstein’ sees Skyler delve into the mortality and fragility of life written about and as a tribute to Skyler’s cat Lilly. Lilly sadly passed away last year a day after emergency surgery last year at a ripe age of only three years old. Shocked and extremely grief-stricken by the sudden loss after vets reassured them him that everything would be okay, the song is about the between moments. After a turn for the worse, Lilly was rushed to hospital and by the time Skyler arrived, Lilly was unable to breathe on her own, pumped full of methadone, brain-dead and stitched up like Frankenstein’s monster.
The ‘Frankenstein’ music video is a touching and sweet tribute to the beloved feline family member.
