Known for their experimental flare and blistering electronic rhythms Sydney electro rockers Autosuggest have once again disintegrated the boundaries of genre with their latest release ‘My Signal’, which is scheduled to drop tomorrow, June 11.
Right from the get-go, Autosuggest rip into a foreboding and driving synth beat full of heavy distortion on ‘My Signal’, that slowly builds up with foot thudding percussion and distinguishable fuzz. Recorded in isolation and taking cues from the early work of Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, it’s a sultry, slow-burning groove, which is soon punctuated by Alec Mallia’s unapologetic, simmering vocals, which flow along, almost spoken.
From there, it lashes into a gritty, blistering track that’s accentuated by the alluring female guest vocals. Pulling together an intense ride, the single tells the story of trying to flaunt what you’ve got, even if it’s just to mask your pain or insanity on the inside, spawned from the band’s core lyrical themes of lust, addiction and dependency.
“For this ‘season’ of the band a lot of the work is based upon exiting a toxic relationship, finding all the wrong ways to cope with the mess and learning to deal with it.”
Known for their combinations of punk-instrumentation with synthpop, deep house and trip-hop, this single sees the band evolve and reshape even further, experimenting with pop aesthetics and indie-electronic sound pallets.
“‘My Signal’ is probably our most pop release to date but we believe our current audience is well provided for, with our signature heavy bass and our newer, cheekier take on electronic elements,” the band reveal.
“Although ‘My Signal’ can feel texturally kind of heavy at times, I took those janky chords from Strokes-style riffs, the playful little electronic percussion from INXS etc. So we’re moving towards that new-wave rhythm and feel. I don’t think there’s a lot of acts in this area at the moment that are leaning that hard into pop style choruses like we are, it’s a lot more playful than its contemporaries, but keeps the attitude.”
Initially a solo endeavour from songwriter Alec Mallia, ‘My Signal’ follows his first EP ‘Murmur’ and 2019 debut album ‘Tame Harm’ which saw the project expand with bassist Jack McFarlane and guitarist Jordan Sexty, setting the rockers up with an infectious band dynamic.
