‘House of the Rising Song: Bridge Folk Night’: Haven City & Mon Coeur.

The Bridge Hotel presents, House of The Rising Song – a semi-regular singer-songwriter night.

The first in the series featuring Haven City & Mon Coeur

With witty humour and genre bending progressions, Haven City’s heartfelt music is a blend of folk, pop and organic rock. Growing up with the sounds of Kate Miller-Heidke and Crowded House, their confessional and dreamy lyrics are matched seamlessly with ear worm guitar hooks and angelic harmonies. Come on down to the mellow tunes of Haven City.

The voice of Mon Coeur is an idiosyncratic journey through melody and lyricism. Tales of love, loss, the search and the journey delivered in resonant alto. Her earthy mix of pop, folk and jazz vocal styles is raw and floral, reflecting her upbringing in the Central Victorian Goldfields. With Influences ranging from Karen Dalton, Feist, The Everly Brothers, Sharon Van Etten to Florence and the Machine; Mon Coeur’s songwriting and vocalisation is largely inspired by the romanticism of the everyday goings on around us and her passion for exploring the stream of consciousness. After spending some time performing in bands such as Luna Deville, Skyscraper Stan and Tailor Birds; supporting the likes of Marlon Williams, D.D Dumbo, Angie McMahon, Admiral Fallow (UK), The Wagons and Anthonie Tonnon (NZ), Mon Coeur is a singer songwriter with bite and well geared to venture solo.

Jim Lauderdale and Ella Hooper.

Jim Lauderdale is a 2-time Grammy winning music legend, an A-list Nashville songwriter whose songs have been hits for George Strait, Blake Shelton, The Chicks, Gary Allan and more. His eclectic catalogue of albums runs the gamut of roots styles, from bluegrass to R&B to his first love, traditional country music, on his 35th LP ‘Game Changer’.

From the start of his career, Jim Lauderdale has been creating his own musical world. Too expansive, eclectic and creatively curious to fit into any prescribed genre boxes, he innovated what is now called Americana music, long before there was a term for it. Everything about the man and his music is classic and timeless, but he’s a total original. The McCartney-esque melodies sung in his aching high lonesome tenor, the fiercely authentic bluegrass songs with mind-expanding psychedelic lyrics… nothing about Jim’s music can be reduced to a single influence, and no other songwriter would fuse these classic strains of tune-craft into such unexpected but immediately satisfying combinations.

The scion of a preacher dad and music teacher mom in rural North Carolina, Jim’s world was turned upside as a kid when he saw the Beatles’ explosive debut on Ed Sullivan, rewiring his creative mind. Teaching himself a variety of instruments, Jim explored songwriting as a teenager, fueled by a musical diet that ran the gamut from George Jones to the Grateful Dead, Al Green to the Stanley Brothers.

Although he never got to work with his idol Gram Parsons, who Jim immortalized in his classic signature song ‘The King of Broken Hearts’ (also the title of a feature documentary on Jim), Lauderdale has realized that great dream of any musician – to stand shoulder to shoulder making music with his biggest inspirations. His duet albums with bluegrass icon Dr Ralph Stanley earned Jim his first Grammy award, he penned albums worth of bluegrass gems with the late Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and he’s on a short list that includes Paul McCartney and Burt Bacharach as a writing partner of Elvis Costello.

It’s no wonder that artists from Willie Nelson to John Oates line up to collaborate with Jim, hoping to snare some of that Lauderdale magic. After all, his songs have helped sell millions of albums for artists like George Strait, the Chicks, Patty Loveless, Lee Ann Womack, Blake Shelton, Solomon Burke, Gary Allan and Vince Gill. Classic songs like ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’, ‘You Don’t Seem to Miss Me’, ‘Hole in My Head’, ‘Halfway Down’, ‘We Really Shouldn’t Be Doing This’ and many more have come from his pen.

SupperClub Friday Presents: Matt Joe Gow

Matt Joe Gow grew up in the deep south of New Zealand in a town with bad weather and good music: Dunedin. Surrounded by music, he was encouraged to pick up a guitar at an early age. After traveling the world, Matt moved to Melbourne, Australia, drawn by its vibrant music scene. In 2009 released his debut record The Messenger, produced by multi-Aria award-winner Nash Chambers, and featuring contributions from Jim Moginie of Midnight Oil, and iconic Australian country guitarist Bill Chambers.

As Alternative Country continued to grow in popularity, Matt toured and supported acts such as Chris Isaak, Justin Townes Earle, James Reyne, Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson.

Whilst regularly working on other projects in the studio, it would be 2016 before the next Matt Joe Gow record, Seven Years, was released to critical acclaim. The record was self-produced by Matt and guitarist Andrew Pollock. After touring and numerous festivals in support of the record, and encouraged by its positive reception, Matt returned to the studio in 2018 to make the follow-up, Break, Rattle and Roll. An ambitious record which went on to win the Music Victoria Award for Best Country Album.

After the rewarding but demanding process of making Break, Rattle and Roll, Matt headed back into the studio in 2020 with the concept of making a stripped-back album. Midway the world was hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The result is a unique record which, although laborious to make during a dark time is the most pure expression of Matt’s songwriting and artistic vision of his career.

SONGS FOR SUZANNE: THE MUSIC AND POETRY OF LEONARD COHEN

Henry Wagons, Rebecca Barnard, Delsinki and Alma Zygier perform Leonard Cohen’s most enduring songs, including “Bird On A Wire”, “So Long, Marianne”, “Avalanche”, “Suzanne”, “Famous Blue Raincoat” and “Hallelujah”.

Songs for Suzanne will be a celebration of the beginnings of a distinguished career of a brilliant singer-songwriter. Alongside standards including “Bird On A Wire”, “So Long, Marianne”, “Avalanche”, “Hallelujah”, and “Famous Blue Raincoat”, will feature many songs never performed by the man himself on his Australian tours. Leonard Cohen’s initial success came as an author, with two novels and four collections of poetry preceding his debut album. Cohen’s own readings of some of these works, which saw him compared to James Joyce, will be incorporated into the show.

The fascinatingly enigmatic Leonard Cohen’s first clutch of classic albums saw him become one of the leading proponents of folk. Signed following a Newport Folk festival appearance, Cohen’s early albums were acclaimed by critics and ecstatically received by a community who within two years witnessed him provide a highlight performance at 1970’s Isle Of Wight festival, and receive outstanding covers of his songs by folk giants such as Judy Collins and Joan Baez.

Audiences will be spellbound by classic Cohen favourites from his most notable albums such as Songs of Leonard Cohen, Songs from a Room, Songs of Love and Hate, and New Skin for the Old Ceremony. Known for his haunting acoustic melodies and deep, raw vocals, Cohen was a true folk singer and poet who adapted his songs and style as time went on, never losing sight of the current music trends and modifying his sound through the decades.

Please do join us for this amazing journey through the music and poetry of Leonard Cohen.
