SCREENSAVER

Melbourne/Naarm post-punk quintet screensaver are coming to play the Eastern in Ballarat on November 10th in support of their sophomore album ‘Decent Shapes’ out on Poison City Records (AUS) and Upset the Rhythm (UK).

Since their formation in 2019, screensaver have consistently delivered the post-punk goods, combining classic era vibes with contemporary influences, creating a sound that is as dark as it is danceable. In 2022, the band embarked on their first international tour to the US, playing sold out shows in Austin, Chicago, and New York, as well as the legendary Gonerfest in Memphis.

With previous releases garnering attention from the likes of Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, The Sleaford Mods, and Rolling Stone Magazine, screensaver have quickly cemented themselves as one of Melbourne’s most intriguing and exciting bands.

Minor Gold

Minor Gold are the new Americana/Folk duo featuring ARIA nominated, award-winning songwriters Tracy McNeil & Dan Parsons. Living in a van whilst touring as solo artists in early 2020, Parsons and McNeil hightailed it out of Melbourne Victoria up to sunny Queensland, narrowly avoiding the winter as the first lockdown occurred. Holed up in the land of palm trees and perfect weather, the duo subsequently wrote their debut album ‘Minor Gold’ – released August 11, 2023.

Cal Wilson, beloved stand up comic, writer and actor, has died

As announced in an Instagram post published today, Cal Wilson – beloved actor and comedian – has tragically passed away “surrounded by family and friends in hospital after a short illness.”

“We are devastated to share the news that Cal Wilson, the much-loved stand-up comedian, writer and actor died today, surrounded by family and friends in hospital after a short illness,” the post states.

“Cal was loved by her family, friends, fans and peers and a huge hole has been torn in the heart of our community.”

A post shared by Cal Wilson (@calbowilson)

Alongside her illustrious standup career – having appeared in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 14 times – Cal Wilson appeared in shows such as The Great Australian Bake Off, Spicks And Specks and Have You Been Paying Attention?.

“Even just looking at Cal – her funky purple pixie cut with hot-pink fringe, quirky farshun choices and dimpled smile – instantly boosts our mood,” we wrote about her show, Supposably, at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. “She clearly delights in the ridiculous – eg. initiating ‘secret walking races with strangers’ while out and about – and her comedic timing is flawless.”

A staple of her community, fellow comedians took to the post to share their condolences and memories.

“This is so tragic and my heart goes out to Cal’s family,” Rebel Wilson commented. “I was very very lucky to work with Cal on multiple projects, especially over the last few years where she wrote brilliant material for me. She was amazingly talented and amazingly kind.”

“Unbelievable. She was beautiful in every way,” shared NZ comic Rhys Darby. “An amazing talent, such a quick brain and so much style and taste. This hurts hard.”

“Absolutely devastating,” Dylan Alcott also commented on the post. “Cal you are such a beautiful person who always had time for everyone. Was always a pleasure anytime I got to work next to you.”

“Cal was one of the warmest people in the biz,” shared comedian Ethan Cavanagh on his Instagram story. “She always had time for younger comics and helped me fix some of my favourite jokes very early on in my career. A massive loss.”

Vale, Cal Wilson.

Sin City, The Brakes, The Thing From Spring

In the year since SIN CITY crossed the ditch and expanded their line-up they have become a tight-nit and well oiled 5-piece rock ‘n’ roll machine, regularly delivering hair-raising, high energy shows across the pubs and dive bars of Melbourne. This winter they headed to Sound Recordings in Castlemaine to capture this magic on tape and subsequently knocked out a brand new album of country-fried, street rock bangers. ‘Am I The One You Love?’ is the first single off this sophomore LP to be released and showcases SIN CITY at their 70s pub rock best. In celebration of its release, the boys are taking their show on the road for 5 dates across Victoria with a cavalcade of friends in tow. These are sure to be unforgettable performances so be sure not to miss out!

The Rhinehearts, The Thing From Spring, Moondyne Joe

Perth power pop trio Rinehearts, who comprise former members of Screwtop Detonators and Snowman, have today announced the October 13 release of their second album, ‘Full Bloom’, through Cheersquad Records & Tapes in Australia and New Zealand, and venerable power pop institutions Kool Kat and Rock Indiana in the US and Europe.

To mark the occasion, they have also dropped a killer new single, “Could You Would You”. The band has been lucky enough to work with none other than legendary musician/songwriter/producer Dom Mariani (The Stems/DM3/The Some Loves/ Datura4) on production duties for the new recordings.

Bollard, The Thing from Spring, The Pearlies

Bollard continue their album tour for ‘Lo’ throughout Victoria with an afternoon show at The Eastern Hotel. Bring your dancing shoes (we’ll clean ’em.) Joining them are Thing from Spring and The Pearlies!

The thing from spring is a loose goose kinda band. Lovers of riff, loyal devotees of harmony, bastions of the beat and tasters of the brew. Best seen intimately in your local piss wreck facility.

The Pearlies consist of Hattie Frdelja on keys, Jade Moran on vocals and Norah Ziino on drums. Jade and Hattie have been performing together through their school years and have recently started to find local gigs and traction. The pair have crafted their own tunes richly supported with a Hammond organ sound. The Pearlies incorporate a vast range of retro genres within their discography; reminiscent of the smooth sounds of 70’s love ballads, and the bop and sway of the early 60’

COOLDAD, De Porsal, Brunette Red Dress

Bellarine Indie-Rock band Cooldad are coming to Ballarat for the first show in their upcoming EP Launch tour ‘Spaceman’! Joined by fan favourites De Porsal and Brunette Red Dress. Spaceman is the debut EP from Cooldad, and not one you want to miss hearing live. Including both singles ‘She’s So Different’ and ‘Her Untitled Notepad…’, you can expect a diverse sound from the trio. Ranging from up-beat indie-rock, to more sad and melancholic melodies.

Porpoise Spit, Skink Tank, Grove

Porpoise Spit unleash their debut album DON’T QUIT and they’re bringing the tour train to The Eastern!

Gunning it down the M8 with Australiana royalty “Skink Tank” and teaming up with local legends “Grove”, you’ll be kicking yourself for years to come if you don’t make it down to this one.

Expect explosive guitars, massive whole room harmonies, tears, fist pumps, beers and swaying arm in arm with your mates. This is a celebration of community, music and perseverance, get in quick because it’s the year of the Porpoise baby and it’s about to go express.

Ben Salter – ‘Sublimation’ Tour
