Oxygen College Open Day

Oxygen College is set to open its doors to the public for its annual open day on Saturday August 20. Oxygen continues to develop its reputation as one of Geelong’s most exciting creative destinations. Offering courses in Music Performance, Electronic Music, Music Business, Sound Production, Photography, Video and Painting & Drawing; the College continues to grow each year.

Open day will give anyone interested in exploring their creative side or joining a course, the unique opportunity to come along and see each department in full swing. We caught up with Lauren Mullen who oversees open day activities in her role as student liaison officer.

“It’s a big day for us here at Oxygen College and Don’t Poke the Bear. A lot of planning goes into the day and it’s the best opportunity for people to come along and see what we offer,” Lauren said excitedly.

Each department will have demonstrations going on and you can experience first-hand how all of Oxygen’s incredible facilities are utilised. Lauren started by offering some detail for those interested in photography.

“We have students participating in live studio photo shoots demonstrating the techniques learnt in our Certificate IV in Photography and Photo Imaging course so you will be able to see some of the sorts of activities you will undertake with us.”

The Oxygen College Photo and Video Training Centre is worth seeing as it boasts three fully equipped professional studios, two Mac labs running the latest in photography software, a colour managed printing lab, professional grade lenses and lighting equipment. There is also a gallery for the students to display their works and a student lounge.

In a big step for the College, for the first time in 2017 they will be offering a Diploma of Visual Arts course.

Lauren went on to explain this new addition to their courses: “We have always offered cert II and cert III in Visual Arts – Painting and Drawing, but next year we are expanding on that and offering a Diploma in Visual Arts, so that is a big focus of our open day. People can come in and get a feel for the arts area while current students demonstrate some techniques learnt in printmaking.”

And of course, we can’t forget about Oxygen’s growing music and sound department which has been producing some of Geelong’s most successful musicians over the last few years.

Open day will see the live auditorium and studio spaces come to life with performance and studio sessions with current students.

“If you are into your music, students from our sound and music courses will be participating in live studio recording sessions at the College and at DptB and there will be live performances in our incredible live auditorium, with sound provided by sound engineering students,” Lauren noted.

So, if you are interested in applying for a course in 2017 or are a creative person, you are encouraged to drop in on Saturday. The Oxygen staff will be available to show people around the College and answer any questions, current students will also be available to share their experiences and achievements during their time at the College.

“Basically it’s a really great opportunity for people who are interested in studying a course to come along and check things out for themselves first hand”.
