Outdoor Mexican pop-up bar El Barquero has returned to the Bellarine for summer

Providing a full fiesta, this cruisy Mexican cantina will once again be bringing the summer drinks (or a Chupito) with a serious serve of Mexican on the side.

While we can’t take that much-needed trip to Mexico just yet (hopefully really soon though), Queenscliff has you sorted with the return of their outdoor Mexican pop-up bar for the summer – and we know you need a margarita (or ten).

Launched back in December last year by the legends at Searoad Ferries and situated beside the beach in Queenscliff, El Barquero promises fresh, simple, yet traditional Mexican food in an epic outdoor location. After servicing bubbly patrons for the summer, the bright and vibrant venue took a siesta for the winter, closing in April with the promise of a return for the summer… and now that time has come with the venue opening once again this week, officially reopening on Friday, December 10.

The key takeaways

  • Mexican pop-up El Barquero has returned to Queenscliff
  • The venue will be located just by the ferry terminal
  • Expect tacos, tequila, cocktails, burritos and nachos

Keep up with the latest food and booze news via our website.

Continuing to deliver fresh, simple, yet traditional Mexican street food and drinks we know and love, the colourful menu consists of housemade salsa and corn chips, soft shell tacos of the day, as well as Taquitos with veggies and refried beans, delicious beef or chicken burritos, quesadillas and some loaded looking nachos. If you’re not into Mexican (absolute madness), they also served fish and chips, burgers and breaky rolls and wraps, alongside sides like chips and wedges.

For those impartial to a drink or two, the bar will see the return of local and imported beers, wine and cool cocktails. For those who dare, the hero is a range of Chupitos (shots) that will definitely get you in the mood for food.

There are some changes however with the cantina, including the pop-up now operating as solely a takeaway service now, which means no table service. However there are plenty of tables set up in the new temporary beer garden, and the beach is still close by for a Mexican picnic.

It is a pretty cool way to spend a summer evening, enjoying the small things, hanging with your amigos with the sound of waves breaking in the background. Or grab a takeaway and in a few step sit on the beach and just soak it all up.

You’ll find El Barquero right next to RORO Café, next to the ferry terminal in Queenscliff (1 Wharf St East, Queenscliff).

The venue will operate from Sun – Thurs 12pm – 3pm, and Fri & Sat 12pm – 6pm (then 7pm during January).
