Odyssey Film Festival Recap

Just over a month ago friends and family headed to Village Cinemas in Geelong for the annual Odyssey Film Festival – an event that showcases the incredible work year 11 and 12 students are creating as part of their VCE studies.

The short films screened covered everything from mimes dealing with a dead body, identity theft to outdoor sports. The night was a testament to the growing talent of film makers in the region.

Making short films has never been more accessible, with GoPros and iPhones common household items that can be taken anywhere and shoot almost any moment – many of the films screened were captured on one of these devices to later be edited in the media studies class at school.

From the night two winners were chosen. The audience favourite (who was selected from an audience app voting system created by Chris McDermott) was Ben Head, a year 11 Kardinia International student for his short film ‘Walk, Don’t Run’. The best film award (as chosen by the judges) went to Oliver Midson, a year 12 student from Geelong High School for his film ‘Barry’. Barry was a humorous short clip about a puppet (think muppet style) who was on the hunt for his missing legs; his hunt taking him all across Melbourne.

Overall it’s been another successful event and one that showcases the unique talents that are coming from young people in the region and being created during VCE studies. Here’s to the next one and to the growing support for young filmmakers.
