Mathematician meets musician: William Troiani explores the integration of live music with interactive experiences through creative project Obdurate.
The pursuit for more as a musician is an endless journey – more finessing of production, more layers, more live show antics, more songs. Add into the equation the infinite world of numbers and you have entered the mind of mathematician and musician William Troiani – a cognitive culmination of sound, numbers and sensory stimuli.
Packaging his diverse skills into one, William Troiani operates under the creative project Obdurate, a unique, multi-sensory performance which sees the talent interweave live drumming with synthesized soundscapes and interactive visuals to match. The visuals incorporate geometric shapes, intricate textures, and cinematic filming to evoke a dreamlike environment, bridging the gap between reality and abstraction. Troiani’s show not only immerses audiences in the sonic swells, it prompts philosophical reflection and pushes the boundaries of musical performance. This results in an artistic display unlike any other and will be unfolding live during his new performative project, Perfectionism in Speedrunning and Music.

In an ambitious and daring display, Perfectionism in Speedrunning and Music takes Obdurate into the world of expert gaming, partnering live music with live gaming on stage. The interactive experience aims to take punters of a visual and auditory journey, marrying multiple elements into a multi-sensory performance.
The performance engages four world-class gamers to play the GoldenEye 007 video game live on authentic CRT screens, with their gameplay in speedrunning projected onto a large screen for the audience to witness every precise manoeuvre and split-second decision in real time. Soundtracking the intense visual display is Troiani on drums, playing both Obdurate originals and classic music from the GoldenEye 007 video game to mirror the on-screen action, creating a dynamic synergy between rhythm and gameplay.
The elevation of these two elements combined will have audiences enthralled by the engaging entertainment. Troiani will also take on MC duties throughout the event, guiding the audience through the gameplay and providing live commentary on the implemented strategies and challenges faced by the experts, along with delving into the history of GoldenEye 007 speedrunning.
Unlike any traditional live music experience, Perfectionism in Speedrunning and Music plays into the infinite opportunities that live music presents and the multitude of methods of delivery. It plays into the visual elements of the game whilst amplifying the intensity of the interaction through pace and progression. Troiani’s performance adds layers of emotion and intensity, exploring themes of competition, focus, and mastery. With pauses for conversation and analysis, the show invites audiences not only to marvel at the speedrunners’ precision but also to reflect on the artistry and dedication behind the gameplay.
This is just one of the creative outputs under the Obdurate dome, with the project continuously pushing the bounds of live performance through integration of vastly different mediums of entertainment.
The captivating concept is a must-see to comprehend and thankfully Troiani will be tackling three shows, held on consecutive Wednesday’s across December at Bar Open in Fitzroy.
