Nick Martin is an Australian photographer known for his captivating portrayal of Melbourne’s music scene in the 1980s. His photographic work has garnered attention for its raw, authentic portrayal of musicians, capturing not only the essence of the performances but the spirit of a generation.

Step into a different era—one where the raw energy and visceral emotions of Melbourne’s 1980s rock and roll scene come alive. Nick Martin’s Moments In Time is a photographic essay that captures the essence of a time when the city’s pubs, clubs, and bands formed the beating heart of its nightlife.

Nick Martin’s Moments In Time features both local and international bands that brought life to the city’s pubs and clubs during the early 1980s.

This collection, which includes previously unpublished photographs, provides a window into a bygone era where Melbourne’s nightlife was raw, wild, and full of musical talent.

Martin’s distinctive photographic technique, using Ilford HP5 400 ISO film pushed to 1600 ISO, brings an intensity to the images that perfectly reflects the gritty atmosphere of the venues and performances.

Many of the images are considered portraits, with Martin using high contrast and neutralized backgrounds to separate the performers from their environment, creating an intimate and powerful focus on the subject.

The photographs in Moments In Time capture more than just moments—they embody the spirit of Melbourne in the 1980s, frozen in time with emotion, energy, and nostalgia.

Nick Martin will also be hosting an artist talk on Saturday 7 May, where he will discuss his work and the process behind Moments In Time. More details on this to come.

The photographs in this series have never before been published, making their debut all the more significant – don’t miss out!
