New local group Lively Presents is bringing The Rubens to Geelong for a Sunday sunset session on the bay

Lively Presents is the new local group bringing the best in live music and unforgettable experiences to regional Victoria.

If you’re from around the region and you’ve gone to an event or two over the years it’s highly likely you’ve heard of UNO Presents. Hailed as Geelong’s premier party presenters since 2013, these legends are all about providing Geelong and the Surf Coast with top calibre arts and entertainment through the likes of Coastal Jam, Dancing Heads, Sunset Soirée, Sundancer Thailand and Bloom, among a swathe of other one day events.

Providing music lovers with safe, well-curated and welcoming environments that allow people to connect with one another and grow creatively through the medium that is music time after time, the crew have now evolved with the creation of Lively Presents – the new live music arm of UNO Presents, dedicated to bringing the best (and they mean the best!) in live music and unforgettable experiences to regional Victoria.

“Over lockdown, I made a commitment to myself to work on projects that would help improve the region’s arts and culture,” says director Adam Metwally.

“My good pal Luke Emmanuel Hindson [of The Torquay Hotel] and I saw that there was some serious lacking of consistent and high quality / larger capacity live music shows in Geelong. So we’re working to change that!”

Kicking off the new endeavour, Lively Presents is putting on a Sunday sunset session of iconic proportions with Sydney pop-rock collective The Rubens who will be taking to The Pier in Geelong on April 10. That’s right: you’ll be able to bask in the sun setting while you’re sporting a delicious drink and watching none other than The Rubens behind one of the most beautiful backdrops you can find in Geelong.

And this is just the beginning. With a starting gig like this, you can expect to see some serious talent come through Geelong over the next 12 months.

The Geelong gig makes up just one of the stops on  The Rubens newly announced ‘Waste A Day’ tour, which will see the band taking to more than 25 locations across the country from February through to April before performing alongside Vance Joy as part of his The Long Way Home national tour across Sept – Nov.

Celebrating the release of new music and the 10-year-anniversary of their self-titled debut album, the tour is titled after their new single, ‘Waste A Day’.

Released this month, ‘Waste A Day’, with its slick, breezy melody and the band’s signature lyrical-swirls, is a fresh and inspiring offering from The Rubens, yet also sits comfortably alongside recent fan-favourites from 0202, ‘Live In Life’ and ‘Masterpiece’. The band said of the track, “Everyday has the potential to be a good day. Squeeze what you can from it.”

An absolute earworm bursting with singalong hooks and a strong message of hope right in time for summer, ‘Waste A Day’ is the first song by The Rubens that band mates and brothers Sam, Elliott and Zaac Margin have co-written together.

‘Waste A Day’ arrives just nine months after The Rubens’ fourth studio album, 0202. Featuring the singles ‘Live in Life’ and ‘Masterpiece’, 0202 continued the run of success that began with the Sydney band’s Platinum-selling debut, self-titled album a decade ago in 2012

Loaded with effortless jams, 0202 saw the band fully transform into an alt-rock/pop powerhouse and, for the first time, self-produce an album that had people re-evaluating what they thought they knew about The Rubens. 0202 followed third album LO LA RU, which featured hits ‘Never Ever (feat Sarah)’ (now Triple Platinum), ‘Million Man’ (Gold), ‘God Forgot’ (Gold) and lead to sold-out shows and a 42-date Arena tour supporting megastar P!NK.

Their second album Hoops saw the band sell out headline shows at Hordern Pavilion and Margaret Court Arena and included hits ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Cut Me Loose’ and of course the 4 x Platinum the hit title track, which topped the 2015 triple j Hottest 100, while their debut self-titled LP was home to ‘My Gun’ (Certified Platinum), ‘Lay It Down’ (Certified Gold), ‘The Best We Got’ and more fan-favourites.

Alongside the Geelong gig, The Rubens will also hit up Hamilton Performing Arts Centre in Hamilton on March 16, Horsham Town Hall in Horsham on March 17, Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat on April 9, and will perform their rescheduled 2021 tour dates at The Whalers Hotel in Warnambool on February 2, Torquay Hotel in Torquay on February 3 & 4, and The Forum in Melbourne on February 5 2022.

Tickets for the Geelong Sunday session go on sale on November 23 at 9am here. Hit The Rubens’ website for more details.
