New independent theatre company arrives in Geelong

words by staff writer

Overflow Theatre Company is debuting its first production of Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2025.

Three young creatives are screwing their courage to the sticking place and establishing a new independent theatre collective in central Geelong.
“With so much talent in this part of the world, we’re passionate about creating opportunities to foster young talent, and for local performers to be paid for their work,” said co-founder and artistic director, Molly England.

Overflow Theatre Company’s ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’:

    Friday 16 May, 7PM

Their first production slated for mid-2025, The Tragedy of Macbeth, is a particular favourite of the team.

“This play captured my imagination ever since I studied it in Year 10 at Christian College. Our vision is to stage it in an accessible way, while still staying true to the original language,” said England.

“Our grungy, kooky reimagining captures the Bard’s exploration of ambition, love and fate.”

Auditions have already taken place, drawing a wide range of performers from actors with mainstage credits to those who are just starting out.

Overflow Theatre Company is supported by Platform Arts (formally the old court house) in the CBD. As a part of their fundraising efforts, the company is registered with the Australian Cultural Fund – a government initiative. Tax-deductible donations will go towards mounting Macbeth, and making a real difference to the work of local artists.

“We can’t wait to present new and classic works that speak to everyday audiences, right here in Geelong.”
