Back for summer: Nestled beneath Geelong’s Ferris Wheel is The Wheel Cafe, a funky pink spot dedicated to doughnuts and coffee

Crispy on the outside, delectable on the inside, doughnuts from this bright local spot are well worth the calories.

For a while now, our region has seen doughnut stores and food trucks in Belmont, Portarlington, Geelong CBD, East Geelong, and North Geelong. Yet along the Geelong Waterfront, one of Australia’s most stunning waterfronts, where you’d think there would be many doughnuts – there were none. Filling that geographical doughnut hole is The Wheel Café, a bright pink outpost sitting directly beneath Geelong’s signature attraction, the Giant Sky Wheel.

Opening in early 2022 and ran by Geelong locals Brandon Verfurth, Grace Connell, Jack Brugman and Chloe North, the pint-sized doughnut shop is a fitting addition to the stunning foreshore and its calm beaches, parklands, sea baths, restaurants and iconic street art. And with summer finally arriving, both the Giant Sky Wheel and The Wheel Cafe are back on the waterfront, after closing for the winter period since July.

Keep up with the latest local food and booze news here.

A labour of love for the 12 months prior to opening, The Wheel Café officially opened mid-January 2022 and has since been churning out soft and chewy edible halos of sweet, sweet goodness alongside arguably some of the smoothest coffee in Geelong.

Doughnuts are served warm, so they are fluffy and melt in your mouth with each bite. Lovers of tradition can indulge in these classic vegan-friendly cinnamon rings, with a choice of strawberry, caramel or chocolate sauce expertly drizzled over the top, all served in a compostable tray.

Depending on your mood, you can pair your carbalicious rings with a unique coffee bean blend from Surf Coast Coffee Roasters. Catering for all types of caffeine lovers, the café serves full cream and low-fat milk from Inglenook Dairy, as well as Oat, Almond and Soy milk alternatives sourced from local suppliers.

A festival favourite, the cafe are also dishing out twisted potatoes if you needed any more convincing.

With more additions to come, it doesn’t get much better than ordering up fresh dough goodies and hot coffee beneath a Ferris Wheel with views of the surrounding Corio Bay any day of the week.

Sometimes life just gets it so right and this is one of those times.

The Wheel Café is located beneath the Giant Sky Wheel and is open Monday to Thursday from 4pm to late, and Friday to Sunday from 11am until late.
