National Wool Museum launches new online exhibition

Due to COVID-19, most of the region’s cultural institutions have closed their doors for the foreseeable future to help contain the spread of the virus, including the National Wool Museum.

Luckily we’ve come along way this past decade and technology has meant we can do things we would never have thought possible, including a visit the Geelong institution virtually from your own couch.

Named Our Heritage, Our Collection, this digital exhibition celebrates the City of Greater Geelong’s Heritage in 50 objects, selected from the themes War, Wool and Work.

The objects have been handpicked from the City’s expansive heritage collection and honours ANZAC Day commemorations this year. Of the 50 featured items, 11 have wartime connections – including military pins, personal stories, audio recordings, memorials and monuments.

The exhibition adds to the museum’s already existing suite of online collections and follows Council’s adoption of the Our Heritage, Our Collection report on 14 April 2020. The report, which was funded by the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, brings together the City’s heritage collection of 12,000 moveable artworks, objects and artefacts valued at close to $28 million in total. The National Wool Museum Collection features prominently in the new exhibition.

You can view the exhibition here.

Our Heritage, Our Collection was a major project delivered by the National Wool Museum and the Arts & Culture Department of the City of Greater Geelong. The online collection will continue to host exhibitions and community-curated themes online, with a vision to accompany further displays in the future.
