Movie fans rejoice! Cinemas set to reopen across Geelong

Words by Keegan Bennett

Good news for movie fans across Geelong and the Surf Coast: cinemas are reopening this Thursday the 12th, following the easing of Victorian COVID restrictions.

Among those reopening includes The Pivotonian in East Geelong, which is implementing several COVID-safe practices to ensure moviegoers can enjoy their carefully curated selection of arthouse and indie films.

The Pivotonian will be airing three films across five sessions with a capacity of 20 patrons per session. For added safety, the sessions are extra spaced out, to allow time for thorough cleaning. The Pivotonain remains cashless and highly encourages online booking.

The films on offer include the 2019 recording of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s acclaimed Fleabag; Sam Kelly’s Savage, a crime film based on true stories of New Zealand’s street gangs and the new film from Jo-Anne Brechin, Paper Champions, a comedy about a young man attempting to find love.

In more mainstream offerings, both Reading Cinemas in Waun Ponds and Village Cinemas in the Geelong CBD are also reopening on Thursday, with both implementing several practices to ensure the safety of guests.

Both Village Cinemas and Reading Cinemas remain committed to social distancing measures, as well as cashless payments and increased cleaning measures. These cinemas are also operating in line with the government’s requirements for seating capacity, capped at 20 per session.

Both cinemas are screening sessions of all the latest (well as ‘latest’ as it gets) blockbusters. Including Tenet, the new film from Christopher Nolan, which is sure to feature the usual mind-bending special effects and an open-ended plot that we have come to expect; also Freaky, the new movie from the writer of Happy Death Day 2U and the Paranormal Activity films, expect a fun horror romp with this one. New films starring Liam Neeson (Honest Thief), Russel Crowe (Unhinged), Robert De Niro, and Morgan Freeman (The Comeback Trail) are also on offer.
