Midnight Oil is back with The Makarrata Project

Words by Natasha Tupackovski

The time has come! A fact's a fact! It belongs to them! Let's give it back!

Debuted at #1 on the ARIA charts with just as much power and passion as ever, Midnight Oil’s mini-album ‘The Makarrata Project’ is about to leave a huge mark on Australia, released to coincide with NAIDOC week.

A truly beautiful album that embraces the original traditional strident rock sound with powerful and breathtaking voices of the 16 featured First Nations artists, the 7 song mini-album features musical contributions from artists including Kev Carmody, Jessica Mauboy, Tasman Keith, and Alice Skye as well as a recording of the Uluru Statement From The Heart delivered by eminent First Nations people Adam Goodes, Ursula Yovich, Stan Grant, Troy Cassar-Daley and Pat Anderson.

The first song in the album First Nation featuring Jessica Mauboy and Tasman Keith reciprocates the 2020 theme of NAIDCO week acknowledging that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.’

This year NAIDOC week runs from Sun, 8 Nov 2020 – Sun, 15 Nov 2020 and it’s time for all of us to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Australians from all walks of life are invited, wherever you live, you can take part in NAIDOC week celebrations. It is especially important this year to end the debate and finally change the date. Let’s start 2021 right by choosing a day we can share our love for the land, with a date that we can all celebrate only then can we can be a step closer to being on the right side of history. It’s time Australia.

The band will donate all profits from this release to charities that seek to elevate the profile of The Uluru Statement and their label, Sony Music Entertainment Australia has pledged to match all such contributions.

Midnight Oil is no doubt an icon of the Australian music industry with their political voice bringing a real passion for discussing world issues. Once again at the top of their game pushing the boundaries to help mend the fabric of Australia this album is an eye-opening, informative, relevant, and compelling journey. Everyone needs to listen to the Uluru statement and to start listening to the voices of our nation.
