Mexican Graffiti says “Adios” to Geelong after 42 years

Words by Staff Writer

Geelong's Yarra Street staple restaurant Mexican Graffiti to close doors after 42 years of service.

Farewell fajitas, see you later quesadillas – the home of Mexican food in Geelong is closing down.

Mexican Graffiti has served as a beacon of Geelong’s hospitality life since 1982, its two-story sprawling location in the centre of Yarra Street a place of celebration over a delicious Mexican menu for the Geelong community. From birthdays to anniversaries to graduations, the restaurant has been a go-to for locals across its 42 year history.

Now sadly, Mexican Graffiti will be no longer, announcing its closure via social media last night.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the regionĀ here.

The statement poetically started with, “Mexican Graffiti is closing its doors after 42 years of blood, sweat and cheers so we must say farewell to our customers and peers.”

It continued, “With so many staff and people to mention we just want to thank all of you legends, repeat business is what kept us thriving for all of these years watching your families grow and celebrate all of the special moments in front of our eyes. It really has been a rollercoaster ride so we ask you again please don’t be shy and don’t let this opportunity pass you by. With three weeks and counting we would love to see your familiar faces and have the chance to serve you one last time and to bid you all adieu. So make a booking or just come on down, you know the drill, for the final time just to raise the flag.”

Whilst there is no confirmation of reason for the closure, it comes at a time of economic downturn for the local hospitality industry. The announcement comes the same week that Lotus Beer Collective, who trade as Valhalla Brewery, entered into voluntary administration, and follows in the closure of Pistol Petes Food n Blues, Ton Ton, Little Mussel Cafe and Napona in Ocean Grove.
