Melbourne’s Riley Catherall’s new single will be sure to melt your heart

Words by Bella de Almeida Reis

The Country-Alt musician dropped a new single earlier this month, and we are swooning over the soothing vocals.

Set to release his first album later this year, Riley Catherall teases us with his new single ‘Leave Me Out to Dry’ alongside its music video. This is Riley’s first release since 2019’s ‘Pray That I Won’t Be Long’, which spent eight weeks in The Music Network’s Country Top 50 Airplay Charts.

While it may appear ‘Leave Me Out to Dry’ is a follow-on from ‘Pray That I Won’t be Long’, it actually plays towards a similar theme from a song in his first EP.

“It acts as a sort of sequel to ‘Watered Down Man’,” says the singer-songwriter, “which encapsulated a version of myself notoriously stumbling my way through Melbourne’s streets heralding a warning not to get too close. It’s a bit of a mantra for myself to ensure I’m not slipping back into the same state.”

His music video was filmed by Tyler Rideway from Shoelace Creative and edited by Ryan Hillam, who is also Riley’s guitarist. The backdrop for the video was Ryan’s backyard in Brunswick which made it all the more authentic for Riley’s sound.

“It also seemed fitting as the song is set around that end of Melbourne and we wanted to replicate the scene of ‘drying-up’ the morning after,” says Riley.

The lyrics and video invite the listeners quite intimately into this world which creates a sense of friendship and trust, connecting us even more to his soft melodies. Not only does Riley’s song really tugs at the heart strings with his ability to story-tell, but he’s also able to keep us captivated for the song’s entirety.

If ‘Leave Me Out to Dry’ is a representation of the rest of the album to come, well, Riley is definitely keeping us on our toes in anticipation.

Sorry got to run – just about to make a warm bath and cue Riley Catherall for all the feels.
