Meet Bob Sugar, the Asian fusion restaurant that’s just opened in Torquay

Asian fusion you can't refu-sion

When it comes to the food and wine scene in regional Victoria, it’s safe to say that we’re pretty damn spoilt. Whether you’re craving a Chef-Hatted dining experience, an afternoon at a dedicated wine bar, or a night of multicultural delights from around the globe, there’s no longer a need for locals to travel to Melbourne for a fix.

Gifting us one more reason to love our coastal towns, a new Asian-fusion restaurant has opened in Torquay, taking over the space formerly occupied by the seaside eatery, Señors.

Boasting a dream combo of curated Asian feeds with fresh cocktails across from the beach, Bob Sugar hits the Melbourne restaurant trends to a tee.

With a focus on super-fresh ingredients and authentic techniques, pretty much everything you’ll find within the four walls of Bob Sugar is mouth-wateringly delicious. The dinner menu is designed to share (the ‘Feed Me’ option is an excellent choice if you’re with a group), however, can also be enjoyed solo ‘cos let’s face it, we all know someone who’s a little too territorial about their food!

You’ll find the likes of Korean Chilli Fried Chicken, sticky pork, and fried cauliflower, to Bob’s Cha-Gio, Kingfish, pork and prawn hidden soup dumplings and the most delicious of bao buns. For the more substantial dishes, choose from a whole baby snapper, a Teriyaki Black Angus, or a warming Masaman Curry. There’s even a whole section dedicated to vegan dishes, with Mimchi spicy miso noodle soup, Masaman Pak Curry and even mixed fungi stir fry.

For the sweet tooths, we spy an Asian inspired donut bao burger that looks too good to eat, with green tea ice cream, sweet red bean, coconut Sos, roasted coconut and green tea Pokky Stix. Intriguing right?

If you’re looking for something more low-key, Bob Sugar have you covered with their lunch and takeaway options. Choose from Bob’s Bento Box or Bob’s Poke Plates for a treat, or keep it simple with one of Bob’s Lunch Bowls. You’ll find Korean burrito, pork and kimchi dumpling noodle soup, and even a Masaman curry. You can even get your drinks to go too.

Speaking of drinks, it’s this menu that has us desperate to book – especially with Bob’s cocktails. Putting an Asian spin of all of your favourites, there are the likes of the ‘Lemongrass Tom Collins’, the ‘Cucumber and Yuzu Sour’ and the ‘Oriental Espresso Martini’, complete with condensed milk and burnt cinnamon. There’s even a Bob twist on the classic Bloody Mary with their ‘Mekong Mary’ which boasts a spring roll for garnish. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself ordering more than one!

Alongside the cocktails, there’s also a selection of tasty mocktails, wine, beer, cider and other non-alcoholic options.

Whether it’s a local’s lunch, a multi-course Asian dining experience, or a drink so delicious you’ll be fantasising about it for a good few weeks to come, Bob Sugar is the perfect place to start.

Bob Sugar will operate seven days. You can find more info via website, Facebook.
