Meadow Festival returns to Surf Coast in 2023 led by English prog-rockers Black Midi

The surf coast's beloved Meadow Festival has teased their first headliner, English math-rockers Black Midi, for their 2023 festival from March 31 - April 2 next year.

Taking over the lush farmland hamlet of Bambra for three stacked days of live music, tickets are generally capped at around 1,400 people for an intimately beautiful BYO weekend of camping and live music.

Black Midi’s inclusion brings a foreign flavour to the Meadow lineup, which earlier this year predictably featured an all-Aussie lineup including Hiatus Kaiyote, Methyl Ethel, and Tropical Fuck Storm. The rockers announced an Australian tour all the way back in March, that rather suspiciously left a Melbourne date TBA.

London’s Black Midi have charged onto the international stage in recent years and become one of the most talked about experimental rock band across the globe. Hailed by many as ridiculous and crazy, the group have undertaken the admirable task of carrying forth the torch of prog rock by creating concept albums that are equal parts intense, absurdist and theatrical.

In just four years, the trio of Geordie Greep, Morgan Simpson and Cameron Picton have released three albums and an EP, including their latest LP Hellfire (2022) which explores grueling themes of war, death and afterlife wrapped up in ten genre-defying tracks. Transitioning from third-person to first-person storytelling, Hellfire takes on the personas of a traumatised soldier and a deranged murderer over a soundtrack that runs the gamut of dreamy jazz through to black metal.

“We’re pleased to welcome Black Midi on the band’s first journey to Australia,” Meadow’s Locals said. “We’ve been asking about making this happen ever since this…”

“And now, please limber up, three full albums of carefully curated chaos are coming to our tiny little stage in Bambra. A very small allocation of Limited Release Tickets have now been made available. General Release will go on sale when the lineup drops.”
