Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College enters world-first virtual reality music project

Matthew Flinders is currently aiming to gain some VR music equipment for their school but more importantly the community. By participating in the Victorian government’s Pick My Project they aim to gain the funding needed for a VR Music Performance Experience set up. Currently there is 150 projects on the site also trying to gain government funding, as this affects the community it would be more beneficial. By collaborating with Deakin University the project will be a world-first and a great contribution to music in Victoria.
So what is the VR Music Experience? Standing on a stage with your band practicing may help with stage direction and overall sound, but the one thing most musicians struggle with is connecting to the audience. With this technology the musician is able to see and hear a crowd. This sort of exposure will help with transitioning from band practice to large live shows, by understanding what type of distractions may be present.
VR has been often used for educational purposes and this would really benefit music students. The aim is that it gives students the opportunity to practice alone to a backtrack of their band. This resource will be utilised by other schools, teachers, students, children or visitors and other members of the arts community.
