Matt Malaysian Cafe is bringing traditional Malaysian cuisine and spicy, bold flavours to Geelong

This new spot is serving up some of the best authentic eats in town.

Boasting a melting pot of Thai, Chinese, Indonesian and Indian cuisine and flavours, Malaysian cooking is an all-time favourite of ours. Attracting a legion of foodie fans, it’s the cuisine you can always rely on for tasty and fragrant curries, moreish noodles, punchy rice dishes and piles of buttery roti.

For those seeking these aromatic, spice-packed flavours locally, an authentic spot has just opened in Geelong, gifting local foodies a new spot to indulge in.

Keep up with the latest food and booze news across the region here.

Having only opened at the start of August 2022, Matt Malaysian Cafe has already made a mark on the local dining scene, garnering rave reviews and praise for the delicious and flavoursome food.

Transforming a space at 60 Charles Street, Newcomb, previously operating under Izz Cafe, Matt Malaysian Cafe is open for dine-in and takeaway every day except Tuesday, providing the ultimate lunch-time flavour punch you need to get through the day. The fit-out and cafe itself is simple and modest, but the flavours are anything but, with fresh ingredients and an abundance of herbs and spices to smash out great flavour in every spoonful.

So what can you expect to find?

Think Roti canai (YUM!), Nasi Lemak with or without Fried Chicken, Laksa Penang, and Nasi Campur, which translates to “mixed rice” in Indonesian and Malay. It’s a traditional dish that consists of a scoop of steamed rice, served alongside a small portion of many different sides and is truly sensational. You’ll also find a selection of Wok noodles like Mee / Kuew Tiaw, Mee Goreng Mamak, Mee Hailam, Combination Hor Fun and a Noodle Tomyum, alongside a selection of Wok rices (delicious Nasi Goreng), Char Kway Teow (aka one of the most epic noodle dishes in the world from the streets of Malaysia), Murtabak and so much more.

A highlight on the menu is the Nasi Kerabu – a Malaysian cuisine rice dish – a type of Nasi Ulam – in which blue-coloured rice is served with dried fish, fried chicken or grilled beef and crackers, pickles and other salads. Interestingly, the blue colour of the rice comes from the petals of Clitoria ternatea (butterfly-pea) flowers (bunga telang) which are used as a natural food colouring in cooking it.

There’s also entree dishes like veggie spring rolls, samosa, Keropok lekor (Malay fish cracker snack), Pisang Goreng, chicken satay skewers and Cucur Ikan Bilis. As for drinks, there’s Teh Tarik (pulled milk tea), Sirap Bandung (rose syrup with condensed milk) and Sirap Limau (rose syrup with lime), plus soft drinks, milo, tea and black coffee.

If you’re unfamiliar with the exciting flavours of Malaysian cuisine, it’s time you and your taste buds were educated with a visit to this absolute hidden gem.
