Marshall Okell: Sipping On Rocket Fuel

For many years I have been a fan of Marshall OKell. From the first time I saw Marshall and the Fro in the mid 00s in Queenscliff, I was hooked by the boogie bluesy feel. Fast forward 10 years and OKell has released one of the finest albums of the year in the form of Sipping On Rocket Fuel. When you think about it, track ‘Amsterdam’ sounds very much like ZZ Top. That feeling continues on in the second track ‘Spill My Spice’.
This is an album that at the very forefront is something very bluesy and delectable and can be indulged in from the very start. It’s hard to write this review because many times, I have tried to put words into sentences but I just get lost into the groove. My favourite track off the album has to be ‘Blue Lagoon’ that takes drum rim clicks and rollicking slide guitar to create such a definite highlight.
If your old man (like mine) likes bluesy rock and roll, then definitely get him this one for Christmas. It’s one of the finest blues releases this year and Marshall OKell should definitely be proud. Fine blues tunes that goes down with a nice cold beer. Christmas Day Sorted.
