Lorne Sculpture Biennale 2025 to explore the Intersection of art and place

words by staff writer

The Lorne Sculpture Biennale (LSB) 2025 is set to return this March, building on the success of previous editions with a bold new artistic vision.

The biennale will showcase a series of site-responsive artworks, commissioning both established and emerging artists to explore how contemporary art can deepen and enrich our understanding of place.

Curated by Simon Lawrie, the 2025 event draws inspiration from the iconic geology of Gadubanud Country. The Great Ocean Road’s stratified landscape serves as a metaphor for the idea that one place is many, layered through time, culture, and species. This concept will guide the exhibition, encouraging artists to engage with the complex history and natural beauty of the region in innovative and thought-provoking ways.

From March 1 to 30, 2025, Lorne will become a canvas for sculpture, spatial installations, sonic art, architectural environments, ephemeral works, and landscape interventions. With 16 precincts spanning the stunning coastal town, visitors will experience a dynamic array of artistic expressions, each uniquely designed to provoke deep, affective responses to the land and its history.

In addition to the main exhibition, the LSB 2025 will feature Sculpture Plus—a suite of public programs, performances, and presentations. These events will foster meaningful connections between artists, audiences, and communities, with a particular focus on regional engagement. Sculpture Plus aims to provide opportunities for First Nations self-determination, promote skills development, and strengthen collaborative partnerships while celebrating the rich arts and cultural networks of the Surf Coast.

The Lorne Sculpture Biennale continues to be an important platform for art that challenges perceptions, invites reflection, and fosters dialogue about our relationship with the land.
