Sublime talent with a touch of good fortune is the short and sweet story of Koi Child, and it all began when electronic hip hop trio Child’s Play and nujazz quartet Kashikoi decided to get together for an experimental jam night in Fremantle.
A little magic was in the air that night and things went down well enough to catch the ear of Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker. For the band’s second gig, they warmed up for TP at Rottnest Island. According to a review by Themusic.com.au, they “managed to get a completely sedated crowd on their feet and grooving”. The relationship between Koi Child and Kevin Parker has continued, with Parker behind the band’s forthcoming self-titled debut.
Keyboardist Tom Kenny: “We recorded the album in a little house on an island which included a nerve-wracking river crossing on a boat, with a large amount of loaned recording gear. The shack-turned-recording studio made for a really nice vibe: swimming in the river, recording vocals in the kitchen, sinking an ungodly amount of tinnies and encounters with giant weirdo spiders.”
The band will kick off a small run of shows with a spot at The Karova, Ballarat on March 11. Koi Child’s debut will drop a week later on March 18.
