King Stingray was formed by lifelong friends Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) in 2019, by recruiting mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar, backing vocals and yidaki), Yimila Gurruwiwi (Yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). They started to blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create their unique “Yolŋu surf-rock” sound which has captivated the nation.

Dealing in ancient melodies, earnest harmonies and rich surf rock hooks intertwined with bilma (clapsticks) and yidaki (didgeridoo), King Stingray have clocked up an extraordinary string of achievements in recent months, including the 2022 ARIA for Michael Gudinski’s Breakthrough Artist, four tracks in this year’s triple j Hottest 100 and the prestigious 2022 Australian Music Prize.

King Stingray’s live show has become fodder for boasting rights in Aussie contemporary music, having caught one of their early performances now a point of pride. With friendship and connection to family and culture resonating through everything King Stingray do, their trailblazing live show guarantees good times and big vibes. Don’t miss out!
