King Stingray announce biggest ever national album tour

Celebrating the release of their long awaited debut album, Yolngu surf-rock outfit King Stingray have announced their largest national tour to date.

Off the back of their highly-anticipated self-titled debut album, Yirrkala band King Stingray will rip ’round the country this October, on their largest national tour to date, bringing their good vibes and huge choruses to the masses.

Kicking things off at The Triffid in Brisbane, the band will then make their way south to Sydney’s Manning Bar and Melbourne’s Croxton before rounding things up at The Gov in Adelaide, Fremantle’s Freo.Social, and ending things back in the NT at Darwin Railway Club.

Keep up with the latest music news, releases and interviews here.

King Stingray’s do-it-yourself ethos and connection to home and family resonates through every song on their debut album, which was finally released on August 5 to critical acclaim. The album features previously released radio singles “Hey Wanhaka”, “Get Me Out”, “Milkumana”, “Camp Dog”and “Let’s Go”, all of which saw the band soar to unexpected heights in the lead up to the album release.

For the uninitiated, King Stingray is a story of lifelong friendship and two cultures coming together.

Growing up together in Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem Land, founding members Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu (frontman) and Roy Kellaway (guitar) have been playing and making music together for as long as they can remember. Yirrŋa and Roy formed King Stingray with mates Dimathaya Burarrwanga (rhythm guitar backing vocals and yidaki), Campbell Messer (bass) and Lewis Stiles (drums). The band seamlessly blend ancient indigenous melodies with surf, indie and funk influences to create a unique sound of their own: Yolŋu surf-rock.

Hailed as “one of the most exciting acts in the country today” (NME), the band have taken out triple j’s ‘Unearthed Artist of the Year’ J Award for 2021, as well as NME Australia’s ‘Best New Act From Australia’ Award and Rolling Stone Australia’s ‘Best New Artist’ 2022.

Surfing an epic wave of live shows through 2022, the band have shared stages with Ball Park Music and Midnight Oil, performed during the AFL’s ‘Dreamtime at The G’ match, delivered a mind-blowing set at Splendour in the Grass, and wowed the nation with their powerful cover of Coldplay classic “Yellow” for triple j’s Like A Version.

With no signs of slowing down, King Sting are ready to electrify venues in all cap cities.
