Josh Wolf is bringing his funny and brutally honest show to Melbourne this week

It’s fairly common to come across musicians who grow up, become parents and seem to lack inspiration in their later materials and works. Sometimes you just can’t sing about being an angry teenager when you’re actually nearing 30.

Fortunately, comedians don’t face this problem. In fact, according to US comedian Josh Wolf, children are the greatest inspiration of all.

“So many of my jokes are about my kids” he laughs, “But that being said, if they didn’t do stupid shit I wouldn’t have a so many jokes.”

When asked if his kids ever get angry about publically being the subject of his comedy he cheekily replied, “My son asked me once, ‘hey dad, do you have to tell that joke’ and I said ‘do you like those new shoes? Because that joke bought you those shoes.

“When you threaten to take things away because you won’t have the money to buy them, they tend to allow you to say whatever you want,” he laughs.

And while we are on the topic of saying “whatever you want”, Josh is currently making the rounds on his first ever stand up comedy tour of Australia.

“I have never performed in Australia. The only time I have been in Australia to perform in any way shape or form was years ago when I was on a show called ‘Chelsea Lately’ and we went to Sydney to shoot a full week of shows and that was the only time I’ve performed down under.

“I’m really excited, I’ve been drinking a lot of beer to try and get ready. It’s like training for the Olympics.”

Speaking of why he’s finally making the trek, Wolf humbly explains, “Honestly man, the overwhelming support that I get online from people in Australia has really sparked this tour, the support has blown me away and I can’t wait to get there.”

Having worked tirelessly on his new routine, Wolf spoke of the extend process it takes to prepare a one hour stand-up monologue.

“In cooking terms, jokes should go in croque pots. They should sit there and simmer with you checking on it every now and then,” he says. “I tell long-form stories, I always have.

“It’s one of the reasons I never do late night TV sets because I feel I can’t showcase myself in five minutes.

“In terms of how long it takes to write; I’ve had hours that have come in three month, but it still takes 9 months to get it tightened and ready. It’s definitely not a process that can be rushed.”

Funny and brutally honest, Wolf’s live show rolls into Melbourne’s Comics Lounge on Wednesday May 22.
