Jesus Christ Superstar

One of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s most successful and well-known musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar has been enthralling audiences worldwide for over 40 years. Regarded as the first rock opera, created as a concept album at the end of the turbulent 1960s, it is appropriate that it should have at its centre a social and political rebel in Judas Iscariot. Jesus’ meteor-like rise provides, as the title suggests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. As Jesus radical teachings are evermore embraced, Judas increasingly questions the enlightened motives of this new prophet, resulting in betrayal. Christ’s final days are dramatized with emotional intensity, thought-provoking edge and explosive theatricality. Propelled by a stirring score, Jesus Christ Superstar illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit with a passion that goes straight to the heart.
This local adaptation, presented by the award winning Geelong Lyric Theatre Society, marks the company’s 40th anniversary and showcases the region’s finest talent.
