Donut lovers rejoice.
Today is National Donut Day people.
That’s right, those doughy, sugary, glazed little round works of art have their own day – and it’s actually got a pretty great backstory to it!
Celebrated on the first Friday of every June, International Donut Day is a day to celebrate humble donut and the men and women who served soldiers donuts during the First World War. It’s actually an American celebration, but for whatever the reason, it’s made its way to Australia, giving us the perfect excuse to head on down to our local donut source and indulge.
Here’s where to find some good ones.
Daniel’s Donuts
If you’re craving the best in deep-fried, icing covered treats, it’s long been known that Daniel’s Donuts is the place to go. Located in Portarlington, in Belmont at the old Hungry Jack’s on High Street and at the Wallington BP, Daniel’s is definitely worth it to indulge in the classics such as Nutella, and Fresh Jam and Cream, or creations like the Cookies and Cream, Snickers Custard, and Passionfruit Cheesecake. They’ve even got vegan options so no one has to miss out. Be warned, they tend to sell out quick so make a donut run here a priority.
For this special occasion, Daniel’s are throwing a three-day celebrations of donuts, running from today until Sunday. Their production team has been working extra hard to pump out extra donuts, so there’s no chance of these babies selling out. They’re also running a giveaway competition for the three days so head on over to their socials to enter.

The Wheel Cafe, Geelong
The Wheel Café is a bright pink outpost sitting directly beneath Geelong’s signature attraction, the Giant Sky Wheel, churning out soft and chewy edible halos of sweet, sweet goodness alongside arguably some of the smoothest coffee in Geelong.
Doughnuts are served warm, so they are fluffy and melt in your mouth with each bite. Lovers of tradition can indulge in these classic vegan-friendly cinnamon rings, with a choice of strawberry, caramel or chocolate sauce expertly drizzled over the top, all served in a compostable tray. There’s even hot jam donuts too.
Depending on your mood, you can pair your carbalicious rings with a unique coffee bean blend from Coffee Basics, a small batch roasting business in Central Victoria. Catering for all types of caffeine lovers, the café serves full cream and low-fat milk from Inglenook Dairy, as well as Oat, Almond and Soy milk alternatives sourced from local suppliers.

Nuts For Donuts
Taking over the old Goldsworthy Convenience Store, Nuts For Donuts opened earlier this year, gifting us all a new carb-loaded sugar palace.
From the people behind Thomastown’s alcohol-infused donuts (sorry fam, they don’t have those here), Nuts For Donuts was born back in 2018, with a focus on chef-made, craft donuts using the highest quality ingredients with everything made in house.
Home to a kidult-fusion treat, Nuts For Donuts combines the sugar-glazed dough that we loved as a kid with the sweet, sweet indulgence of certain sugary treats – you name it, they’ve got it. Every single donut is handcrafted and made with all the love and carbs you could ever imagine, coming in an array of colours, flavours, and options. At Corio, there are more than 40 different flavours to choose from. The flavours—oh my gawd, the flavours!—are out of this world delicious.
There’s apple and cinnamon, Bueno, cappuccino, caramel mudcake, blue heaven, golden gaytime, Kit Kat Nutella, Lamington, M&Ms, rocky road, snickers pod, Tiramisu, vanilla slice, and blueberry cheesecake, among many, many others. The best part about this new spot is that they’ve even got a wide selection of vegan and gluten-free sugary little round works of art.

FlourBoy
Inspired by the abundance of iced, sugared and gourmet treats taking over Melbourne, Uncle Donut was one of the first to bring glazed, dusted, fried and filled hand-crafted donut varieties to Geelong. FlourBoy is the latest – and dare we say greatest – venture for this locally-owned bakery, offering carb-lovers of Geelong a one-stop-shop for donuts, gnocchi, pasta, coffee and shakes.
Located in level two of Westfield’s Food Court, this delightful outpost combines the best of what we’ve come to love from Uncle Donut with their daily hand-dipped, indulgent treats with a number of Nonna-worthy pasta dishes that are guaranteed to perk you up after a tough day.
For the donuts, you’ll find a selection of their best-selling round works of art, including the cinnamon, Nutella, chocolate sprinkle, cinnamon scroll, TimTam explosion, original glaze, strawberry sprinkle, caramel Oreo, Gaynetto, Creme Brulee, and Salty Caramel, among others. Donuts are $4 each or you can get six for $20.

Maple Bakery Surfcoast
There’s no hiding the fact that Canadians have a sweet tooth, especially with bakeries creating swoon-worthy butter tarts (with or without raisins), almost too-pretty-to-eat sugar cookies, and cakes that look like works of art.
Giving locals a piece of that action, Torquay’s Canadian-inspired café and bakery Maple Bakery Surfcoast has become renowned for its sweet pastries, comforting warm desserts and of course, the flavour of maple syrup used in creative ways.
A big pull here is of course their huge selection of donuts. You’ll find Maple Glaze Donuts, Pulled Pork Donuts, flavoursome topped donuts, chocolate donuts, cinnamon doughballs and so much more.

Still want more? How about a weekend celebration at the Queen Victoria Market’s doughnut festival?
Back for its second year, treat yourself to an iconic staple of the market, the raspberry-plum jam doughnuts from American Doughnut Kitchen. But for this weekend only, those OG American hot jam donuts will have some competition – with sugar-coated churros, donuts that ooze with chocolate, vegan and gluten free donuts, Greek loukoumades and Churro bowls to try, there’s something for everyone. For the more adventurous out there, there’s even a special release savoury donut – a spaghetti-filled doughnut from Pasta Face.
