International Film project Coming to Geelong After Dark

Having created DEMOCRATIC SET films in 28 cities around the world, Back to Back Theatre is inviting the local community to join them in the making of THE DEMOCRATIC SET Geelong.

THE DEMOCRATIC SET is a residency model for creating short films and performances, to explore the belief that all people are, in principle, equal and should enjoy social, political and economic rights and opportunities.

THE DEMOCRATIC SET uses a custom-made film set, a neutral room with two opposing doors. Disturbingly obvious and tantalisingly strange, each DEMOCRATIC SET results in unique a portrait of the community in which it is filmed.

“Occasionally it’s like a dream sequence in a David Lynch film, disturbing, unstoppable. Sometimes it reeks of loneliness, people going about their business in some seriously fucked-up economy hotel. But mostly it’s full of laughter and hope, a feeling very much helped by the wide demographic of its contributors,” says RealTime Arts.

Running as part of this year’s GEELONG AFTER DARK program, filming will take place between 6pm and 10pm on Friday 6 May. Community members are encouraged to come along on the night, in groups or individually, and collaborate with award-winning Artistic Director Bruce Gladwin who will be leading the process. Those who don’t wish to perform are welcome to come along and observe the film in the making, no bookings necessary.

THE DEMOCRATIC SET Geelong is intended to have a musical focus, expanding on techniques explored in the making of THE DEMOCRATIC SET Edinburgh filmed as part of the Edinburgh International Festival in 2014.

Back to Back Theatre is looking for musicians to collaborate with them on the soundtrack for THE DEMOCRATIC SET Geelong. Interested community members and musicians are encouraged to come along on the night with an instrument or contact Back to Back Theatre for more information on how they can contribute to the project.

For those of you that haven’t seen a Back to Back Theatre show, they’re one of our country’s most important and globally recognised theatre companies, creating new forms of contemporary theatre imagined from the minds and experiences of a unique ensemble of actors with disabilities.

Their work has travelled to 78 cities around the world to critical acclaim and THE DEMOCRATIC SET Geelong is a great opportunity to collaborate with the award-winning group on home soil.
