Texas and its culinary traditions hold great meaning for Bellarine Estate owners Lizette and Peter Kenny. Lizette, a Texas native, met Victorian local Peter while he was working in the US back in 1986.
“Briskets and slow-cooked BBQs were how we celebrated special family occasions and get-togethers with friends in my homeland,” Lizette explains.
“The smoker would go on early in the morning and tease us all day with the aromas. The result tastes sensational and it’s a relaxed way to hang with friends. Perfect for the Texan and Australian lifestyle.
“These BBQs and the Texan way of life bring back such great memories for Peter and I and we knew it was a tradition we wanted to keep going when we settled back in Australia and started our own family, and of course launching the new winery business in 1996,” said Lizette.
The winery was established by Lizette and Peter in 1996 and is passing through the generations with their sons – James as Bellarine Estate’s General Manager and younger brother Julian as Head Winemaker – forging their own industry reputations, while patriarch Peter steers the smoker in the kitchen.
The Texas BBQ tradition is still going strong 30 years later; and now the Kenny family want to share it with visitors who come for the wine and stay for the long scrumptious lunches.
The Native American word for Texas – ‘tejas’ – means friends. The Kenny family’s goal is to bring a taste of Texan culture to friends old and new at Bellarine Estate.
Winery owner Peter, perfected his BBQ skills during his years living in Texas so you’ll find him manning the smoker from early morning to ensure it’s just right – ready to create the famous southern fare.
From sharing plates straight from the smoker to classic American-smoked tender meats, plus super tasty vegetarian options, the Texas BBQ @ Bellarine Estate is available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday lunchtime.
