Words by Staff Writer

Turkish Airlines has introduced direct flights between Melbourne and Istanbul, Türkiye.

In a major win for Melbourne, Turkish Airlines, one of the world’s largest carriers, has chosen the vibrant city to launch its first-ever flights to Australia. The announcement brings not only convenience for travellers but also promises to significantly boost tourism, trade, and job opportunities for the Victorian region.

The move, backed by the Allan Labor Government and Melbourne Airport, marks a historic moment as the first time an airline offers direct flights between Türkiye and Australia.

Keep up with the latest Victorian travel destinations, news and tips here

Commencing with three weekly services from March 2024, the direct flights hold the potential to grow into a daily service in the future. A daily service would add a staggering 109,500 seats to Melbourne each year, injecting over $132 million annually into the state’s economy and creating more than 840 jobs in aviation and tourism.

The strategic importance of these flights extends beyond passenger travel. With Türkiye, Middle East, and Africa being major trading partners for Victoria, the direct flights will provide a substantial boost to trade, contributing to the $5.48 billion two-way merchandise trade in 2022-23. The flights will also add 3,650 tonnes of air freight capacity annually, further enhancing Victoria’s global connectivity.

Melbourne’s diverse Türkiye-born community is set to benefit from these flights, fostering stronger ties between the two regions. Additionally, the direct route to Istanbul will open up key European, Middle Eastern, Balkan, and African markets via the airline’s hub, driving growth in tourism, international education, business, and trade.
