Painting, film and music collide in a mesmerising process of energetic colour and movement.

In a groundbreaking move set to redefine the boundaries of live artistry, Ash Keating, the renowned Melbourne-based contemporary artist, is gearing up for a mesmerising showcase titled LIVE PRESSURE. Scheduled for Saturday, 10th February 2024, at Bunjil Place, this event marks an Australian first, featuring Keating live on stage alongside Ryan Richie and a 12-piece ensemble.

LIVE PRESSURE promises a sensory explosion as painting, film, and music converge in a captivating display of energetic colour and movement. Keating’s dynamic painting process will unfold in real-time, complemented by the transformative interplay of lighting and the dynamic music improvisations of composer-producer Ryan Ritchie and the 12-piece ensemble. This ambitious collaboration is the culmination of Keating and Richie’s artistic partnership, which has spanned numerous projects since 2003.

This live spectacle is a pivotal component of Keating’s major new exhibition, PRESSURE, hosted at Bunjil Place, running until 17th March.

While Keating gained global recognition for his large-scale outdoor paintings using paint-filled fire extinguishers, the exhibition showcases a new dimension of his artistry. Over the last decade, Keating has cultivated a studio-based practice, allowing for greater experimentation within the controlled conditions of an indoor space.

Operating within an expanded contemporary field, Keating’s diverse portfolio spans painting, performance, sculpture, video, and intervention. His outdoor murals, created with paint-filled fire extinguishers, adorn various locations across Melbourne. The artist has left an indelible mark on the global art scene, exhibiting extensively in galleries and spearheading large-scale, site-responsive art projects since 2004. Notable commissions include the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (2013), the Adelaide Festival Centre (2015), Sydney’s Domain (2018), and Museum Langmatt, Baden, Switzerland (2023).

Collaborating with Keating for LIVE PRESSURE is Melbourne-based composer, performer, and producer Ryan Richie. As the founding member of orchestral jazz electro ensemble The Raah Project and the creative force behind live hip hop/jazz ensemble True Live, Richie’s work draws inspiration from contemporary jazz, minimalism, hip hop, and dance.

Don’t miss the chance to witness the magic unfold live on stage as Ash Keating pushes the boundaries of artistic expression with LIVE PRESSURE. The event promises to be an unforgettable fusion of visual and auditory experiences, showcasing the dynamic evolution of Keating’s artistic practice.

The exhibition runs from 25th November 2023 to 17th March 2024 at Bunjil Place, 2 Patrick Northeast Drive, Narre Warren. Find out more here
